It’d been way too long since I made a new DIY Body Scrub and my skin and my soul were sad. So today I whipped up this chocolate mocha body scrub, and yo . . .it’s like scrubbing your body in desert guys. It’s not the most intensely exfoliating scrub I’ve ever made. It’s more like a light scrub that has a ton of great skin benefits and just feels super luxurious when you need a good pamper. Not to mention that the oils leave your skin baby soft and you smell like you live at Max Brenner. I don’t want to toot my own horn but, actually you know what? Yes I do. TOOT TOOT madafacka! This stuff is good.
You are going to need:
- 1/2 cup Coffee Grounds
- 1/3 cup Cocoa Powder
- 1 cup Sugar
- 1/2 cup Coconut Oil
- 1/4 cup Olive Oil
One of my biggest pet peeves is when people just throw delicious ingredients into a scrub because they smell nice, but they have no benefit for the skin. I don’t have time to sit around making myself into a human fudge bar just for fun. So here is a little breakdown of why each ingredient is beneficial.
- Coffee: Packed with antioxidants which are good for making the skin look glowing and fabulous. It is also said that it increases blood flow to the surface of the skin which is good for making it look healthy and plump. The granules add some extra gentle exfoliation to the scrub and it is said that the caffeine present can help reduce the appearance of cellulite. I don’t know about all that but I figure if it doesn’t we still win here. NOTE: I used grounds that were already brewed because I read that brewed grounds are primed to release more antioxidants and caffeine, but it’s worth noting that un-brewed grounds would be more scrubby.
- Cocoa Powder: Also a powerful source of antioxidants, and the fats in the cocoa are a great humectant for the skin. See? chocolate fixes everything.
- Sugar: This is the main exfoliator, duh. I used coconut sugar because that’s what I keep in the house for coffee and stuff, but white sugar will be more exfoliating.
- Coconut Oil: One of the best natural moisturizers ever ever ever of all time.
- Olive Oil: Basically second best natural moisturizer of all time, and I find that combining the different types of fats helps the skin really take away the most potential moisture from a treatment like this.
Now it’s time to put it together, which is easy-peasy
Combine the dry ingredients in a jar or tupperware that you can close. Put the lid on tight and shake them up.
Add the coconut oil and olive oil into the container. If your coconut oil is solid (which is probably will be unless your house is like he warmest ever) just pop it in the microwave at 30 second intervals until it is liquid.
Stir the oils into the dry mixture with a spoon, and boom you’re ready to rock and roll.
I like to apply my scrubs to my entire body and rub it in while standing in the shower, but before I turn the water on. That way I’m keeping the scrub from getting all over the floor but I am also getting the benefit of scrubbing it in without water which is definitely more effective. As always, be super careful when you use something oil based in the shower because there’s nothing relaxing about slipping and cracking your dome on the tiles. Seriously, that’s no fun.
Let me know in the comments if you try it, and tell me what your favorite DIY body scrub is!
