Sometimes the writing of a blog post requires me to do insane things that no person would ever do in normal life. For example apply and remove five or more lipsticks in one day. Who would do such a thing? My lips were not built to survive that type of abuse. Don’t get me wrong I love every second of it but it can leave my lips a little . . .sore and crunchy. It’s sneaky too because it may feel fine after all those swatches, but then the next day its like cracked, dry old lady lips. Ga-ross.

Of course I have an arsenal of lip balms, scrubs, treatments and DIYs that I use to help get them back in shape, but what about in a pinch? And this applies to everyone out there, not just nutbags like me who abuse their lips. Sometimes those dry dry lips sneak up on you and you don’t have all the things you need to fix them. Then what? You just suffer along through life with dry lips and dream of a time where you could apply a matte lipstick and have it go on smooth and even? No. You take charge and you fix it!

Wherever you find yourself, as long as you can get your hands on some type of lip balm, and either salt or sugar you can make yourself a quick DIY lip scrub. And I mean lip balm in the loosest sense of the term, it can be a Chapstick, a lip balm, an oil, anything that is safe to put on your lips and will add moisture.

Some of the options I have used are:

• Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream
• Chapstick
• Coconut Oil
• Palmers Coco Butter Stick
• Olive Oil
• Vaseline

Just grab whatever you have available and then look for some salt or sugar. I have even done this in hotel rooms with sugar packets that come with the little coffee pot in the room. I’ve done it in an airport with a salt packets from the food court (planes dry the hell out of your lips btw) at home in a rush with the sugar I have in the cabinet. The options are endless. And yeah, in some of those situations I may have looked a little crazy but ya know what? Whatevs, my lips felt better after and someone got to go home and tell their friends about the wacky lip scrub lady in Terminal B. Everybody wins!

Since I’m doing this at home today I’m going to use one of my favorite options which is the Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour cream. I start by putting a generous dollop of it onto my finger, quite a bit more than I would use it I was using it as a regular ip balm. If you are using something in stick form like a Chapstick then you might want to break off a little chunk of it, and work it into your finger tip to make it a little softer first. Like just mush it around until it melts enough that you can easily spread it onto your lips Obviously make sure your hands are clean before you do this, I don’t need to tell you that though right? Of course not, you aren’t that gross I have faith in you.

Once you have the dollop of whatever you chose on your finger, take it and press it into the salt or sugar. I used maple sugar because that’s all I had in the house, so I just poured a bit out on a napkin and dipped my finger right in the pile, because otherwise everything I use sugar in for the next few weeks is going to have had my fingers in it. If you are using something like a sugar packet you can just rip the entire top off and stick your finger right in there, but I found with those tiny salt packets it’s best to pour it into a napkin because they’re too small, and pouring it onto the blob of balm on your finger doesn’t work out so well.

 

The beauty of this is that you don’t need to mix anything. Just spread it over your lips, and rub them together. Rubbing your lips together will mix it up AND scrub them at the same time. Super, super easy and surprisingly effective.

After you’re done rubbing them together, let them marinate in the mixture for a minute or so. That way you make sure you get as much moisture out of the situation as you can. Once they feel like they’re ready to go, then just dab off the excess with a napkin or a tissue and be on your way. Boom, emergency DIY Lip scrub completed!
