I’ve been making things in my kitchen again. I think I like doing these DIY beauty ideas because when I was a kid I wanted to be a scientist. Back then I had no idea that scientists had to do math, which is my greatest weakness, so I thought I was a shoe-in. I was only aware of the mixing things together in a lab portion of the job description. Now that I’m an adult in the real world, a blogger making scrubs and balms in my kitchen is as close as I’m going to get . . .and I’m pretty okay with that.
Luckily it seems that you guy enjoy these simple DIYs as well, so today let’s make a Chai flavored lip balm! It’s simple, hydrating and it smells awesome. Here’s what you’ll need . . .
- Coconut Oil
- Shea Butter
- Chai Tea Bags
Take Three Tablespoons of coconut oil and warm it up in a microwave safe bowl until it is liquid, and fairly warm. Then take three of your chai tea bags and place them into the bowl of warm oil.
In order to get the flavor from the tea into the oil you will need to let it sit in the warm oil for several hours. The oil needs to be warm the entire time or it will harden up so I recommend putting the bowl with the tea and the oil into the microwave for 30 seconds every 45 minutes or so. I left my chai to steep for around 3 hours and my chai flavor was very delicate. If you want a stronger flavor you can add more tea bags and/or leave it to steep for longer.
Microwave some Shea Butter at 30 second intervals until it is liquid enough for you to mix into the oil. Add one teaspoon and stir in gently. Pour into whatever container you plan on using with a tablespoon. I used an old cream eyeshadow container that I cleaned out and put through the dishwasher, but you can buy various lip balm tins online.
Once the mixture reaches room temperature it should be solid in your container. I popped mine in the fridge to help that happen a little more quickly. I’m annoyingly impatient. Then you can either go ahead and use it, or make a nice label and give it as a stocking stuffer!

Hi
Would you have a recipe for cuticle cream?
I don’t have one at the moment, although I do plan on working on one! If you’re looking for something natural and simple for your cuticles though, I recommend trying Jojoba oil. It works great and absorbs quickly 🙂

I ended up using the tea bags and coconut oil in a glass bowl on my mug warmer. Stirred a little ever 30 m or so. Really squished the tea bags around. It kept it warm the whole time and so easy to work with! Then of course added my other oils/base. It smells and feels amazing! I did add a drop of truvia (liquid stevia) for a bit sweeter flavor.
So smart! I might try both of those tricks next time, thanks for the tips 🙂 <3

what can i use instead of the coconut oil? coconut milk maybe?:)
No coconut milk probably won’t work. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature which really has a big impact on the end result. I’m not sure what other types of oils you could use but maybe sonething thick like coco butter would do the trick! 🙂
Hello,
Not sure if I missed it or not, but how much shea butter do you use?
Thx.
One teaspoon 🙂
I am doing something wrong I think. I followed the instructions and then poured into little containers. They never set up solid enough. Mine was really icky green too, not a pale green…a dark swampish green. I used 4 tea bags and let it simmer on a coffee cup warmer for a few hours longer. I wouldn’t think that would make a difference though. If you have any suggestions I’d sure appreciate it. Thanks
Hmmm if they aren’t setting up then maybe try adding a little extra Shea butter. Sometimes with these natural ingredients there are some variations, but adding a little extra Shea should help as it is the most solid at room temp of all the ingredients.
As for the color, I’m but sure why it would come out so swampy, but the color of mine is definitely not the most attractive either. It shouldn’t effect the way it works or tastes though.
Hope it works out next time!

hey, how much approximatly does this make?
a little bees wax would help it solidify…
This is enough for one large lip balm but you can scale it up to make however much you like!
Yeah for sure! But I personally don’t like beeswax for lip products, you can definitely modify it to your preference though
