Oh hair, why you gotta be so high maintenance? Do you ever get to a point where you feel like your hair just feels gross? That’s how I was feeling this week. It’s not damaged because I just got a haircut and I haven’t colored it in ages. It feels like it needs a mask or something but then after the mask it feel kinda, I dunno . . . sticky ? You know what I mean? It’s just not flowing and it isn’t as soft as usual.
Generally when and if this situation occurs it’s safe to say you probably have some buildup in your hair. All the products and the deep conditioner and the leave ins and the heat protectant and whatever else you might use are just built up on there and need to be washed away. You need to wipe the slate clean! But then we run into another issue, doing a clarifying hair treatment leaves it kinda dry. So I like to do what I call a “total hair reset” It’s really easy and it make’s my hair feel the NICEST after.
Step One CLARIFY THE HAIR: Clarifying you hair is super easy. You can either buy a clarifying shampoo OR simply add about a tablespoon of baking soda to your normal shampoo. You dont have to put it into the bottle, just take out the amount you would use to wash your hair and then mix in the baking soda. Then just use it to wash your hair as normal. It will feel a little weird and gritty and dry, but just rinse it well and you’ll be fine.
Step Two DEEP CONDITION: After the hair is clarified and towel dried, now it’s time to do a deep conditioning mask. You can use a DIY mask or whatever store bought mask you prefer. This time around I used this Eva NYC mask, because it’s what I had on hand and hair mask doesn’t just grow on trees. My favorite one to use (besides the DIY one) is the Phytocitrus Mask but like I said, use what you’ve got! Just put it on your hair like you would any other time you use a mask. I like to avoid my roots because it weighs my hair down, so I just apply it to the lengths of my hair and tie it up in a bun. The amount of time you leave it in really depends on the mask, so just follow the instructions for whatever you choose to use.
EXTRA TIP: I like to do this in the sink rather than while I’m in the shower. Mostly because it’s just easier to mix some baking soda into my shampoo over the sink rather than in the shower with all the water in my eyes and stuff. Trying to see what I’m doing and not get water in the baking soda is even less easy than it sounds. Just figured I would let you guys learn from my mistakes.
Yes, Yes . . .I know I need my color done, I’m workin’ on it 😉
After this little routine my hair is softer, shinier and and has much more natural body. Give this clarifying hair treatment tricky-poo a try and let me know if you like it. I’m gonna go run my fingers through my nice soft hair now 🙂

Hello Nicole,
My daughter suffers from the opposite of most women. Greasy hair. Don’t even know what shampoo to buy her. She has to wash her hair everyday but then her ends dry up. Help! Recomend somthing.

Have you tried dry shampoo instead of washing it every day? They are really great for getting the hair to be less greasy without drying out the ends! I use it all the time. Look for one that uses rice starch, I highly recommend the batiste dry shampoo sprays. Affordable & really effective!
