I have been on the hunt for the best dry shampoo for years, and if I’m being honest I’ve tried probably fifty different types. I’m not even kidding. I even wrote a blog post waaaaaaay way way back in the day comparing at least five I had tried and matching performance against price point. I won’t link it because it’s not really relevant anymore and my photography was hot garbage back then, but the point is that I started this search many moons ago and the momentum hasn’t slowed until recently.
For a really long time I was faithful to Batiste, but after a while I realized that while it did definitely make my hair look cleaner, it made it feel incredibly dirty and it also left a layer of dust over my bathroom the likes of which I had never seen. My husband used to joke that if we didn’t clean it up for a few days it looked like a haunted house….and he wasn’t wrong.
Then I began using Living Proof Shampoo and Conditioner and was blown away by the quality so I decided to give their dry shampoo a shot. Which brings me to my first choice in the battle of best dry shampoo.
THE SPLURGE:
LIVING PROOF PERFECT HAIR DAY DRY SHAMPOO
Price: $22 (US)
Pros: It really does get hair cleaner feeling than any other dry shampoo I have ever tried. It makes it look and smell fresh instantly, there’s no white cast (even on my super dark hair) and it doesn’t turn my bathroom into a dusty haunted house. It also has a very subtle and sophisticated smell which I really appreciate because nothing drives me more crazy than spraying myself with my expensive ass, sexy ass Tom Ford perfume only to have it overpowered by a hair product that smells like a damn bowl of fruit loops.
Cons: $22 aint cheap.
Honestly that’s literally the only con. I love this sh*t. I jump into conversations about dry shampoo on twitter to recommend it, I’m dead serious its the best.
But there are times when I just don’t feel like spending 22 bucks on dry shampoo and I want to just grab something for cheap at target to get the job done. That’s when I reach for my favorite steal.
If you watch my favorites and hate it’s video you may have noticed that when I’m in need of a dry shampoo and I want to just pick up something cheap and quick I have a bit of a smash and grab mentality and I often wind up with a lot of ones that I hate. I even picked up a bottle of the Kardashian brand one once. 0/10 do not recommend. I have nothing against those ladies and I respect the hustle, but their dry shampoo is the worst I have ever tried, that’s just a fact.
I did, however find one that I dig a lot by just grabbing it on a whim at target.
THE STEAL:
DOVE REFRESH & CARE DRY SHAMPOO
Price: $3-4 (US) Depending on the retailer
Pros: Ummmm dat price doe. Also, it’s honestly pretty good. It makes my hair feel clean as well as look clean, and it doesn’t smell too strong, although the scent itself is a bit fruity. That’s what I look for when searching for the best dry shampoo, mostly. Good performance and not too stinky.
Cons: If you go overboard spraying it, it can leave a bit of a white cast. It also doesn’t keep my hair feeling fresh for quite as long as living proof does.
Realistically dry shampoo is not a one size fits all situation. What I look for may be different than what you look for and vice versa, which is why I listed my pros and cons because what I see as a con might be a pro for you, ya feel me?
It’s tough out there in these streets trying to find a way to wash your hair less so hopefully either way these are a very good place to start for a wide range of budgets and hopefully help narrow your search.
Do you have one that you think is the best dry shampoo? Because I am always open to new suggestions!
