DIY Coconut Oil Coffee Sugar Scrub!

It's almost shorts weather!  Well here it is.  Maybe where you are it's nowhere near shorts weather or it has been for a long time, but here on the East Coast we're getting all geared up and ready to let our legs breath.

As liberating as it is to get them out in the air after a long winter, it can be a little daunting.  Those things haven't seen sunlight in a while, and the winter months are harsh and dry.  Odds are they probably need some TLC.  I already wrote about HOW TO SELF TAN WITHOUT LOOKING CRAZY and that in itself can be really helpful, but I also like to make sure the skin looks as smooth and healthy as possible.

So I've read many times that caffeine is supposed to help with the appearance of cellulite, and to be honest the whole concept sounds a little iffy to me.  Does caffeine even absorb through to skin, and if it does, can it really have an effect on the appearance of cellulite?  Is the result only temporary?  To be honest, I don't know the answers to any of it, but it sounds like a stretch to me.  I will have to do further research and get back to you.

In the meantime what I DO know is that coffee grounds make a really nice exfoliant and they smell AMAZING.  So why not rub them on your skin and if they HAPPEN to reduce the appearance of cellulite while they're at it, then thats just freakin' awesome, right?

So I read approximately 3,986 recipes for coffee scrubs and from those I concocted a few recipes according to what I have in my kitchen.  Here is the best one that I came up with.

2 Tbs brown sugar

2 Tbs Coffee Grounds (Any kind you have)

1 Tbs Cinnamon (Optional)

Make sure your coconut oil is at room temperature so that is creamy and mixable but not liquid.  Mix the oil with coffee grounds and brown sugar and stir until it is a thick paste.  Add cinnamon and stir again.  I just added the cinnamon for the scent, but you can leave it out if you don't have any or you just left it on the other side of the room and you're too lazy to go get it (no judgements here!)

At this point you should have something that looks like the picture above, and it is going to smell so good that you will want to eat it.  It smells like coffee and donuts.

(Full disclosure, I tasted it and it was delicious)

Now like I mentioned in my last DIY SPA DAY post, you want to stand in the tub or shower and scrub this all over you before you turn on the water, in order to get maximum scrubbage out of it.  The coffee makes it a bit more gentle than a full on sugar scrub, but still don't over-do it.  You want to exfoliate, not scrape your skin off.

You can do this all over your body too, not just the legs. Tank top season is coming too after all.

A few notes:

1.  When you start rubbing it in, you may see large chunks of scrub falling into the tub.  I know when I saw that I was just imagining the phone conversation I would need to have with my boyfriend

"Hey can you pick up some Drano?....Because I clogged the tub with a homemade concoction of coffee grounds and coconut oil....?"

BUT don't be alarmed, as soon as I turned on the water the clumps disintegrated and went right down the drain without issue. . . thank god! Hahaha

2.  Be cautious! The tub might get slippery.  Make sure you rinse everything down well and be extra careful!  Falling in the tub is not cool.

3.  As you rub it in, your hands may look like they are permanently stained with coffee, but it will rinse off easily, I promise!

4.  If your grocery store or local health store don't sell coconut oil, you can try it with olive oil, but it wont smell as nice (And I like the results with coconut much better!)

or you can order my favorite coconut oil on amazon HERE

So give this a try and let me know in the comments if you see cellulite results, or if you know more about it than I do.

NOTD "Spring Gold" Using OPI Goldeneye & You're Such a Budapest

Hey everyone!  Just wanted to pop in and say hello with a little Nail Of The Day!

This last week and a half I've been obsessed with layering  OPI "Goldeneye" Over OPI "You're Such a Budapest" in sort of a reverse ombre pattern.  By obsessed I mean every time it chips I redo it the same way, which is a BIG DEAL because I almost never wear the same nail color/design twice in a row.

If you want to recreate this look its really simple.

Two coats of You're Such a Budapest, then paint one thin layer of goldeneye about halfway down the nail starting from the cuticle.  Then another thin layer of Goldeneye over that, again starting from the cuticle but this time only going about 1/4 of the way down the nail (that's what gives it a gradient effect)

The look is much more striking in person....and it really reminds me of something but I can't put my finger on what it is.  If anyone figures it out, let me know in the comments because it's driving me batty!

If you want to recreate this look yourself you can find these colors here:

Hope everyone's having a great week so far!

How to Feel Beautiful During Your Period.

Ok, so I know some people don't like to talk about this topic because let's face it, it can get gross.  But I promise this wont get graphic!  I'm not here to talk to you about your nether regions, just to give some advice on how to feel pretty when they are forcing your body to stage a revolt.

It's a part of life, once a month you spend an entire week riding the crimson wave, and if you ask me 1/4 of your life is far too much to spend feeling gross and bloated.  So here is my advice on how to feel better...

First issue  CRAMPS...

Oh god they suck, and the obvious answer is take some aspirin or tylenol or whatever.  But some people don't like taking pills, and even if you DO take something, there's that awful stretch of time while you're still waiting for it to kick in.

My advice is to do some light exercise, I know that's not what you want to hear.  You want to hear "curl up in a ball and sob until it's over"  which to be honest is also an option, but it just may not be your best one.

Now I'm not suggesting you go out and run a marathon or squat 300 lbs.  but just do something to get moving like a brisk walk, 20 minutes on the exercise bike or the elliptical, that sort of thing.

The endorphins that are released during exercise help to dull the pain of the cramps, and make you feel better in general. Not to mention it distracts you from wallowing in your pit of despair and misery.  So often we make our own suffering worse just by focusing on it too much.

I also find that it helps me feel less like a beached whale than I usually do during this time of the month.  But we'll get to that part later.

And to reward yourself for being SUCH a trooper try taking a nice hot shower.  Nothing feels better on a crampy belly than some hot water.  Sometimes I even like to lay in the tub and let the hot shower just fall on my stomach for a while.  Maybe that sounds strange, but it REALLY helps.  Don't judge me!  Just try it and see for yourself.

Ok now let's address another issue.  When you're in this state you may feel the need to go into the kitchen and rampage through the fridge and cupboards like a bear at a camp site, but resist!

Take a moment to think and figure out the thing you're really craving, and allow yourself to indulge in that one thing.  Don't let the panic take over because you will feel SO MUCH GROSSER if you eat everything in the kitchen.  There's nothing beautiful about feeling guilty on top of bloated, crampy and cranky.

If you need to eat some chocolate cake or some salty chips (or knock out the sweet and salty craving in one punch with chocolate covered pretzels ayyoo!) go for it.  Just don't eat your weight in junk food.

You might be thinking "Who cares?  I'm so bloated anyway! Might as well stuff my face."   I understand that line of reasoning, but overeating leads to sluggishness and discomfort which will lead you back down the path of wallowing in misery and self pity, which we've been trying to hard so avoid!  Plus, there are things you can do to help the bloating!

There are a ton of things on the market to help you lose the bloat, but I personally I prefer to just go with some dandelion root tea. It's nice and soothing to drink a hot cup of tea anyway, and dandelion root is a very good diuretic. Which in short means that it makes you tinkle a lot and get rid of any excess water you are retaining.

It doesn't taste like regular tea, but it doesn't taste bad at all!  It's a little nutty and plain but good.  The best way to describe it is that it's good in the way plain oatmeal or cream of wheat is good.

You can also make it into an iced tea, and even mix it with other teas that you like the taste of.  Bottom line is, it does a very good job at reducing water retention, and will help you feel less like a blown up balloon.

I'm sure you can find it at some health food stores, but I find it easiest to buy mine in these three packs on Amazon.  That way I have it around without worrying about buying more for a few months.

Next on the agenda...PIMPLES

Not everyone breaks out this time of the month, but if you do, it can really compound how gross you feel.   The issue that I run into when I get period pimples is that I tend to get into a bit of a fit about them, and I over-do it a little.

I want to attack them with everything I've got.  Scrubs! Creams! Cleansers!  And then I end up irritating my skin further, and making it worse.

The best thing to do is keep the skin really clean, but be very gentle too.  Don't scrub too hard, or use really harsh acne products.

Everyone has different skin, but what works for me is using my regular cleanser on my Clarisonic as I usually do, and then gently washing again with the same cleanser and a soft cloth.

Extra attention to cleansing usually keeps the pimples at bay for me, but if they do crop up I like to use a spot treatment, to treat JUST the area that's broken out.

An old favorite, that I recently re-discovered is the Burt's Bees Blemish Stick.  It's actually a roll on fluid, not a stick so a strange naming choice on the part of Mr. Bees, but I find this to be really effective and not over drying.  I also like the way it smells!

Now that we've addressed the major issues, let's move on to something more fun!  Treat yourself to  a little pampering...

This month my little bit of pampering was the Boscia Bright White Peel Off Mask.  I had it on hand, and I enjoy how nourishing and hydrating it is  (and how funny it makes me look lol!) so I gave it a whirl.

Your little bit of pampering can be anything though.  Like going to get a pedicure, or just taking a few minutes to paint your nails a fun color.  Anything that lets you take a few minutes to feel extra pretty.

Once you've done all of the above, you might feel good enough to leave the comfort and protection of your own home, but good god now you actually have to put on clothes?!

It might be tempting to pick up last nights pajamas off the floor and roll out of the house like that, but I have a theory, hear me out...

My theory is if you LOOK like you have your act together, you'll trick yourself into FEELING like you've got your act together.  It works for me!

But looking like you've got it together doesn't mean you can't be secretly comfy!  I like to choose my clothing strategically

The Pants:  Word to the wise, stay the hell away from jeans this time of the month.  They will only bring you discomfort and self loathing.

Sleek black pants scream "Look how freakin' classic and chic I am!"  But nowadays you can get a pair that are so comfy they might as well be PJs.  A big shout out to the person who invented Spandex and Lycra!  My go to are the famous J. Crew Pixie Pants but there are many types to choose from.

The Shirt:  Two words Comfy + Flowy.  Like with the pants you want to look nice, but not restricted.  And the long loose design helps hide the belly in case you do gave into that urge to eat everything you see (it's ok, no judgements)

I have this blue Alternative Apparel top that I LOVE, but they stopped making it :(  Fortunately Alternative Apparel has a ton of similar items that are really nice quality.  You can also find things like this basically anywhere to suit your needs (think Urban Outfitters, H&M Etc.)

Something Cuddly:  If it's not too warm out I like to include something cozy and cuddly like a soft eternity scarf.  It just makes me feel better and helps get me out of my ugly funk.

The Shoes:  I like the shoes to be comfortable, but with an edge.  The Steve Madden Troopa Boots pictured above are basically my favorite shoes of all time.  They are comfortable enough to walk in all day, but they look kinda bad ass at the same too.  Perfect for convincing yourself to pull yourself together and tough it out!

This little system works really well for me.  It helps me feel a lot more beautiful (or at LEAST close to normal)  when my "lady times" threaten to throw me into that downward spiral.

Hope this helps some of you!

Let me know in the comments if you have any tricks that help you fight off the effects of Aunt Flow.

How to Self Tan Without Looking Crazy

It's that confusing time of year again.  The weather is getting warmer, we will be exposing more skin, and if you're like me your body is as white as the wall...

Do you fake tan and risk looking insane or do you say SCREW IT! and rock the white bod?  If you are  thin and toned with very smooth skin, I say rock it.  Pale is beautiful too!

But if you aren't blessed with a smooth, white, tight, porcelain body, the fake tan can make you feel much more confident exposing your skin, so let's address how to self tan and still avoid looking like you were in an accident at the Cheeto factory, shall we?

The Supplies

Ok so what will you need?

A Body Brush or something else to exfoliate your body in the shower.

A Self Tanning Mitt  or Latex Gloves  (this is really a matter of personal preference but we'll get to that)

Now that we know what we need, we can get started...

Prepping Your Skin:

Ok so before we even consider painting/staining our pale little bodies, we need to make sure the skin is ready.  If there are any drier areas on your skin, the tanner will cling to those areas and be really difficult to remove, which makes sense if you think about it because dry skin is just begging for something to soak up!

Moisturizing is not the answer because while it will make then skin less dry, it will also stop the tanner from adhering, so it will wash off very quickly.  So what do you do? Exfoliate.

In the shower you should have some type of exfoliating tool.   I prefer a natural bristle body brush, but you can use a loofa, scrubby gloves or whatever type of tool you prefer for manual exfoliation.

For those tougher areas, like the sides and bottom of your feet I reccomend switching to a pumice stone.  It is especially important to get any dry skin off the feet and ankle area as this tends to be where the most uneven fake tan blobs try to hide.

To finish the skin prep you must shave.  Putting self tanner on stubbly legs will cause the tanner to cling to the areas around each follicle, which gives you that Roy Lichtenstein, pixel point where every hair grows effect.  While shaving may not completely negate that, it will help diminish it significantly.

Choosing a tanner:

I like to combine two types of tanner.  A bronzing tanner and a gradual daily tanner in the form of a lotion.  This allows me to apply my tanner once properly, and extend the life of its wear with the gradual tanning lotion on a daily basis.  I feel that doing this creates a more natural look because you are far less likely to get lazy and screw up the main application of you do it less often.

I don't mind taking my time and applying it correctly if I only have to do it every 7-10 days, you know what I mean?

But there are many types of self tanner out there, how do you know whats a good color?

First you need to look at the color of the tanner.  Look up reviews and examples (thats what us bloggers are here for).  The key things to look out for...

1.  Don't go overboard.  If you're really fair, don't go out and buy a "Medium/Dark" tanner.  Buy a "Light/ Medium" one.  Think of it like this, the colors on the bottle are not examples of the color you WANT to be, but the color you are STARTING with.

Not only will an overly dark tan look weird, but it also emphasizes any mistakes you make like streaks, missed areas etc.

2.  Regardless of your undertones, choose a tanner with green/brown tones.  Natural tan skin is not orange, but a mix of many colors which naturally amount to a sort of brown with hints of olive.  A good tanner will be brown, never bronze and definitely never orange!

Again, if you are unsure of the color because it is white before it processes on the skin, look up examples!

My favorite is the St. Tropez Foaming Bronzer and the St. Tropez Gradual Self Tanner.

(if you do buy the foaming bronzer and are very fair I recommend applying it when you will be home all day, and then waiting the recommended four hours and showering it off before going out.  The tanner straight out of the bottle is WAY dark, but once washed off it is GORG)

Applying The Tanner:

So mitt or no mitt?  It's a matter of preference.  I don't see a huge difference with the mitt so I often go without it rather than repurchase one.  If you do decide to go mitt-less remember to wear gloves! There is nothing cute or natural about brown palms.

And then there's the age old question of how to tan your own back...for this I have no answer except, ask someone for help!  I have tried using strips of old towel or cloth after seeing that recommended on other blogs, but I never had any luck with that.  Ask your mom, boyfriend, roommate, sister, whoever you have handy.  I'm sure you would do the same for them!  They have a better view back there anyway so at least you can be sure it's even.

Cleaning up mistakes:

Even if you are careful and do everything right, you may may some boo boos.  My mistakes seem to occur around my ankles and wrists.  If you wind up with wobbly lines or blobs, my advice is this.

Take an alcohol based astringent (I don't recommend these for your face or for skin care in general, only to remove the tanner) and place it on a cotton pad. Gently rub the areas that are too dark.  The astringent really helps to get some of the color off and blend in the mistakes.

As you can see, the result isn't perfect, but its certainly better!

You can also help fade streaks on your body by exfoliating in the shower, however this will also fade the tan.

Some Things To Look Out For:

So if you follow the information above you should be ok, but you aren't completely out of the woods yet.  There are some more things to consider...

- Make sure you tan your face!  Having a white face is a dead giveaway that your tan is fake.  It also just looks really weird like you are wearing a mask of your own face or something.  Creepy

If you don't like putting tanner on your face for fear of breakouts, simply switch to a darker foundation shade and make sure to blend it past your jaw and down your neck.

-Even if you do put tanner on your face still switch to a darker foundation.  Light foundation over a tanned face will look unnatural, ashen, mismatched and just bad.  A good rule of thumb is match your foundation to your neck and chest.

- If you tan your face (with tanner or foundation) make sure to blend it into your hairline and around your ears.

-  Know your limits.  Don't try to be extremely tan if you are naturally extremely pale, like I mentioned earlier it only serves to look kinda weird as well as highlight any imperfections in your tan.  A good rule of thumb for this is "Never try to have a fake tan that is darker than you can get naturally tan from the sun. "

And thats all folks!  I hope this helps, and if you have any other suggestions or questions, let me know in the comments.

Spring/Summer 2013 Nail Inspiration (with swatches and nail art!)

As the weather gets warmer, I dislike wearing accessories more and more.  I get claustrophobic-ish and cranky when it's warm out.  So I like to compensate with fun nails...and lipstick!  But let's save that for another post.

A great nail color or design is a great way to add a little interest to your look without adding any objects touching your skin.

To start with it's always good to have some kick ass colors to choose from.  So here are 18 of my favorite nail colors of the moment...

Butter London- Big Smoke is a grey-ish smokey blue color with a shimmer finish.  It's not what I call a traditional spring/summer color but I think it's a really nice option for the ladies who can't give up their dark colors when the warm weather rolls around.

Julie G-YOU-Niverse is your typical gold-green duochrome shade. I picked this up last week at IMATS NYC, but you can find them at your local rite-aid store (Sorry there's no link!)  The shifting color adds some interest, thats for sure.

Color Club- Wild Cactus is a bright jewel toned green creme.  It's one of my favorite greens this year, which is saying a lot since emerald is the Pantone color of the year and green is EVERYHWERE right now.  The color is actually a little more blue-ish in real life, just FYI...oh and the bonus is that it wears REALLY well.  Minimal chipping even on my chip prone nails.

Essie- Mint Candy Apple  Don't yell at me! I am totally aware that this was a part of the 2009 winter collection.  But c'mon if this doesn't say spring/summer to you than what does, I ask you!  What does?!  It's a pale mint green with a hint of blue, and there's a reason everyone went crazy looking for it for 3 years and then they brought it back...because it's awesome.

Essie- Marshmallow  Creamy white shade, with a jelly-like semi translucent finish?  Sí, por favor.  It's white enough to look kind of mod and cool, but translucent enough that you wont look like you panted your nails with white-out...am I the only one who feels that way when I wear stark white polish?

Essie- Beyond Cozy  Also technically a part of one of Essie's winter collections, but an antique silver works for any season.  The finish on this is similar to that of the OPI liquid sands, or the Zoya pixie dusts.  It's glitter that dries matte so it still shimmers without the glassy shine.  I think it looks really cool.

OPI -Goldeneye  I know I've mentioned this shade on here before.  It's the most glittery, metallic gold nail polish I've ever had the pleasure of using.  It's the closest to a legit metallic finish I have encountered in a polish.  It's like jewelry for your nails, so perfect for standing in as an accessory in the hot weather.

Nails Inc.- Jermyn Street  This odd little neutral hovers somewhere between grey, brown and purple/mauve.  You would need a venn diagram to accurately describe it, and I'm too tired to make one, so just look at the picture.  Why do I love this color so much? It's SUCH a perfect toe color for summer!  It is neutral enough that it will never clash with any of your sandals or outfits, but it still has enough color that you won't get that "Corpse Feet" look.  If you have pale feet you totally know what I'm talking about.

Color Club - Put A Pin In It  Is a Birchbox exclusive color. It's a pretty rose-gold color with a high-shimmer finish which gives it a semi-metallic appearance.  Much like goldeneye, it makes good finger jewelry.  My only gripe is that it chips quickly, so if you are looking for something that lasts a little longer I recommend trying Essie - Penny Talk.  It's a little darker but it has the same effect.  My bottle ran out, otherwise it would have been right here on the list.

OPI Barefoot in Barcelona  Is a nude with just enough warmth to make it summery.  Looks great with a tan.  Enough said.

China Glaze- Cranberry Splash  Even in the spring and summer, I always get an itch to have red nails.  This color translates well to the warmer seasons because it's bright and metallic, so it doesn't look heavy like some darker reds can.  It's like fresh fruit, with a metallic finish.

Urban Decay- Fishnet  Is currently only available on eBay, so I kind of regret even including it (the eBay price linked there is still a good value for the set though)  It's a great summer shade, but I wouldn't tell you to run out and get it because it chips very quickly.   Let's just call it a source of inspiration for now and I'll let you know if I find a dupe, deal?

Zoya- Adina  Light purple with green duochrome?  Yeah exactly.

Julie G- Bikini A neon coral shade with a cream finish.  Perfect for spring/summer fingers and toes, and totally cute for a beach vacation.  I think the name says it all.  Like the other Julie G Polishes you can find it at Rite Aid

Urban Outfitters- Oyster  Is a sheer opalescent shade.  It can be worn alone if you don't mind visible nail line, or layered over any number of colors to make them more interesting.  Hmmm I bet it looks really cool over "Bikini"

Essie-Merino Cool  All these bright colors can get exhausting.  When I need something basic but not exactly nude, this is my go-to color.  The photo makes it look a little brown-ish, but its really a purple/grey/taupe.  The color in the amazon photo is very accurate, so click the link if you want to see what it looks like.

OPI - You're Such a Budapest  At first glance is a pale violet creme, but if you look closely there's a tiny hint of shimmer.  I didn't even notice it until I put it on, but it adds just a little more interest.  And the shade is perfect for spring.  Pale purple with just enough grey to save it from being a true pastel.

Julie G- Dance In The Dark  I know I'm super annoying putting these on here even though you can't get them online right now.  But this color is insane and my photos do it not justice.  It reminds me of a bright blue hot rod, and if that doesn't say summer I don't know what does!  I can also see this coming in very handy around the fourth of July. VampyVarnish has a much better photo of it HERE if you want to take a look.  It really is amazing looking.

WOW that's a lot of polish!  But thats not all. I cooked up three simple nail art designs, that are easy to replicate, using the colors mentioned above. I'm not a nail artist so don't judge me too harshly.  I guess that just means if I can make them look decent, you probably can too.

This one is so easy.  Just paint the whole nail with OPI - You're Such a Budapest and then use a small brush like an eyeliner brush, or a nail art brush to paint Essie- Beyond Cozy  on the half moon area of your nail, then top with your favorite top coat.

This is probably the most difficult look of the bunch, but it's still pretty easy!  Start by painting your nails with one coat of Julie G- Bikini and then once it is dry place Nail Striping Tape in various geometric shapes across each nail, making sure to leave some hanging off at the ends so you can grab it easily later.

Paint over the tape with two coats of Essie-Merino Cool.  When it's about half dry, peel the tape up to reveal the neon lines, and top it with your favorite top coat.  Done!

Ok this is the easiest one of all.  Two coats of Essie- Marshmallow.  Wait for it to dry.  Take a black sharpie and draw on some stripes.  They don't have to be perfect to give the effect.  It's like an artistic, cartoony take on animal print.  Wait about 10 minutes for the sharpie to dry, top coat and voila!

I hope this got you excited for summer nails.  I'm gonna go outside and drink an iced coffee now!
