Everyday Flawless Foundation Tutorial!

Hey everyone, time for our weekly video tutorial!  This week it's back to basics, with a video on how to get a flawless foundation application for daily wear!

The only thing I do different than in the video is use a setting spray, but I only do that if it's going to be a long day and I'm going to turn back into a pumpkin after midnight or something...

I will link you to the setting spray that I use below, so that you can make this last 12-16 hours too (yeah with the spray it lasts that long insane right? I get 10-12 hours of wear with this combination without the spray too, still not bad!)

So watch and enjoy...and don't forget to give it a thumbs up, subscribe or leave me a comment!

How To Have An At Home Spa Day...On a Budget!

Last week we had a long weekend, so Monday seemed like a great day to plan a girl's spa day.  Nothing fancy, just relaxing in the saunas at the local Korean spa...Unfortunately everyone else in New York City thought it was a great idea too, and we couldn't even get in the door!  We wound up heading to another great little place for a massage instead, which was lovely, but it left me longing for some spa style pamperin'!

But I didn't want to spend any more money, and it's snowy and freezing out and therefore indoor activity was preferable.  So I decided I would design my own spa-style pampering that I could do at home, with things I already have!

THE HAIR MASK:

So first things first, a deep conditioning treatment for the hair.  The reason you want to start here is it's easiest to put this on your hair and let it soak in and marinate while you prepare your next spa-like treatment.  Planning things out well helps make it a more calm and relaxed experience, and the whole point is to feel relaxed, pampered and beautiful!

As some of you have read before, I am partial to my "Maple Coconut Hair Mask" .  Unfortunately I didn't have any maple syrup laying around, but there are plenty of things you can use to deep condition your hair!  What I did have laying around was a tiny drop of Aussie "3 Minute Miracle" a jar of coconut oil and a bottle of olive oil.  Coconut and olive oils both make great treatments, but on their own can be a bit drippy and messy, so to solve that I mixed some oil in with the last few drops of my Aussie treatment.  I opted for coconut because I like the smell better, but if you only have olive that works really well too! Actually, now that I think about it, mixing both of them together might be good too...

Just use a spoon to mix your ingredients together in a tupperware or a bowl and then apply them like you would any other hair mask.  Once it is on your hair tie it up securely and it's time to move on to the next part!

THE BODY SCRUB:

Body scrubs are a great way to feel pampered, and I'm not talking about the body wash you have with the little gritty bits in it.  I mean a full on, dry skin killing, rough patch annihilating, serious scrub!  What you need is an oil that is good for your skin (again I used coconut but olive works very well too) and either sugar or salt.  I used brown sugar, because I had a lot of it, but I have used coarse sea salt, regular sugar, regular salt and all of them have worked really, really well.

Once you have figured out which oil, and which type of granule (LOL that word sounds silly) you will use, mix them together in a bowl, or a mug, or a cup or a tupperware, whatever is easiest for you to bring into the bathroom.  The amounts that you need of each will vary depending on the ingredients you use, so just mix a bit at a time until it forms a thick paste.  I needed about 3/4 of a mug of the mixture to scrub my whole body.

Here is the important part where most people go wrong.  Begin by applying the scrub to your body while it is dry! Just use your hands to scoop it out of the container and rub it into your skin in circular motions.  You may want to stand in your shower because it will get a little messy.  You can even sit in the tub, but no water yet.  The water will start to dissolve the sugar or salt before you have a chance to scrub it in well, and you want all the scrubbing power you can get.  The oil will make it  move around on the skin well, and also add moisture to the skin.  You won't miss the water, I promise.

You want to scrub everything!  Make sure you get every inch.  I even do my face, but you can skip that if you have oily skin or if you just plain don't like to scrub your face.  I do really recommend scrubbing your lips though.  It makes them so soft, and it usually tastes pretty good too!

Don't be shy with it, scrub vigorously!  Once you have scrubbed every inch you can turn the water on and start to rinse.  BE CAREFUL AT THIS POINT BECAUSE THE SHOWER OR TUB WILL GET SLIPPERY!!!  I actually sat down the whole time just to be safe because I'm a total klutz.

Once the water is on you will notice that the granules have dissolved but the oil is still on your skin.  That's good, that's what you want.  At this point you can shave and wash out your hair mask and do whatever you need to do, but don't wash with soap.  You don't want to cut any of the oil you just scrubbed in, it is part of what makes your skin so soft after this treatment.  You will notice as you shave that you feel insanely smooth, albeit super greasy.

Once out of the shower you can remove the excess oil by toweling off.  This should leave just enough. Then apply your usual body lotion.

I use Aveeno daily Moisture Lotion, but you can use whatever you prefer.  The idea is to lock in all of the moisture and smoothness you just created with that scrub.

I also like to apply a thick lip balm...

I love palmer's coco butter stick for this, but again, whatever you usually use will do. After you scrubbed your lips really well, it's good to really slather them up with something soothing and moisturizing.  I love this Palmers stick, but it can be hard to find in stores so I hoard it whenever I find some.  But I found it on amazon for a decent price so I'll link that below.

As for your hair, after you have shampooed and conditioned it in the shower (which you can do as you normally would but it may take 2 washes to get the mask out)  you can style it as usual.

At this point you should feel like this....

And there you have it, the pampered spa feeling at home!

Let me know if you give it a try!  And if you want to know where to get the things I used, I will link them all below.

My new favorite nude lip color is...Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm?!

I am constantly on the hunt for nude lip colors that actually look nice on me.  I am just one of those people who doesn't wear a nude lip well, but I want to so bad!

The other day I was out at the store and I saw the Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Hibiscus, and I thought I would give it a try.  I had heard a few beauty YouTubers mention it, and I figured it was worth a shot...

Low and behold, I think it is my new favorite go-to nude color for when I am on the go!

Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm in "Hibiscus" Arm Swatch

As you can see, it's a brownish nude with a hint of pink.  The coverage is sheer, but fairly well pigmented, so it actually shows up on my lips (which have a LOT of pigmentation naturally and often just absorb sheer nudes like a black hole for lipstick)

It is moisturizing and has a glossy sheen.  You will need to reapply often, but it IS a a balm, so that sorta just comes with the territory.

Top: UD Naked  Middle: Burt's Bees Hibiscus  Bottom: MAC Angel

I swatched it between two popular pink-nudes so you can get more of an idea what the color is like.  It is much browner than Urban Decay "Naked"lipstick, but funny enough, it is almost as pigmented.  It is more brown than MAC angel, and far less opaque. The two are really not comparable at all, but I just wanted to provide a color comparison that many people would be familiar with.

Burt's Bees Hibiscus Lip Swatch

Here it is on the lips.  Very natural and subtle, but enough color and shine to look put together.  A real "My lips but better" color.

Well, safe to say this one will be riding in the front pocket of my purse for a while!

If you want to give it a try you can find it here:

Soft Winged Eyeliner Tutorial with the Tarte Carried Away Palette!

Today I have another youtube tutorial for you guys!  I wanted to do a winged liner tutorial, but lately I have been really into making my winged liner softer using the eyeshadow palette from my Tarte "Carried Away" collectors set.

I really love that set by the way, I'm not sure if it's still available anywhere but I will look into it for you and link it below, because it is so boss.

This look comes in really handy if you want to wear a winged eye but you feel like it might be too much for the occasion!

I'm not one to make rules about makeup like "you can wear dark eyeliner during the day" or "never pair a warm with a cool"  I think there are always ways to make something work...

But with that said, I know that even I have days when I think to myself "If I wear a giant winged eye to this place, I'm going to feel like everyone is staring"  and that is when I break out this bad boy!

I think it says "I'm wearing winged eyeliner...but I'm like....demure too so yeah"  Except it says it more eloquently and gets its point across way better than when I say it.

Anyway here's my video.  Please give it a big thumbs up and subscribe, or even leave me a comment on the video, I love those! I try to respond to all of them.

Smoked Out Lash Line with a Pop of Cobalt! Using the Urban Decay Vice Palette

I've been all about the neutrals lately, and quite frankly, I'm boring myself.  So today I decided to go for a smoked out lash line with a punch of bright cobalt blue.  I always tend to go for neutral eyes with a colorful lip on myself, so for me this is a nice change of pace without taking me too far out of my element!

It's pretty easy too so let's get started

Step 1.

1. Start with a clean, primed eye, and sweep either a neutral shadow, or a face powder over the entire lid.  This is a great trick when you are working with dark and bright colors because it makes them much easier to blend.

Step 2.

2.  Place a black gel liner around the tom and bottom lash line, and smudge it out with a blending brush.   Normally I would split this into two steps to show you, but since gel liner sets so quickly I couldn't stop to photograph before i smudged it in.  In other words, work quickly.  The up side to this is once it sets, it will be on there good and tight.

Step 3.

3.  With a small dense shadow brush, pack a matte, bright blue color onto the center of the lash line over the black gel liner.  With the same brush pack on a matte charcoal or black shadow to the remaining portion of the gel liner.  You may not even be able to see it, but it will help blend the blue.

Step 4.

4.  Guess what the next step is... with a small eyeshadow brush, blend the blue into the charcoal or black shadows, bet you didn't see that coming.

Step 5.

5.  Repeat the exact same process on the lower lash line....So simple, a baby could do this!

Step 6.

6.  Use the darkest black eyeliner pencil you can find, and place it on your top and bottom waterline.  You want to make sure you do the top too, because any skin peeking through the lashes will make the look seem incomplete, and the dark and bright colors only make it more obvious when you missed a spot so really get in there and make it good and black!

Step 7.

7.  Now just curl your lashes and apply your favorite mascara and BOOM done.

Easy, fun and has a ton of impact!

This brought me out of my boredom, I hope you have fun with it too!  I'll link all of the products I used below if you want to recreate this look yourself!

How to Heal Cracked Cuticles (And prevent them too!)

So last week I wrote a blog on how to grow long healthy nails, and I mentioned how my nails changed drastically when I discovered how caring for your cuticles really affects the health and growth of your nails...but what I didn't get into was how to treat your cuticles and get them back to normal if they're already a mess!

Since I am a dope, and forgot such an important step, I figured I would dedicate a whole post to it.  It's pretty important and deserves its own post anyway!

I have always had issues with my cuticles peeling, and it only get worse in the winter months.  I take steps to keep them healthy as I mentioned in my nail growing blog post, but even then they still crack and peel sometimes.  The difference is that now I know how to handle it so it doesn't get out of control.

HOW TO HEAL THEM:

Ok so your cuticles are really cracked and dry.  They are peeling and they might even be bleeding.  They hurt and they look icky and you are both annoyed and embarrassed by them.  I feel your pain, I really do...

Take a step back for a moment and treat this for what is actually is...an injury!  The broken skin is really no different from any other cut you have on your body, except that the skin around it is a bit hard and chapped.

What you need to do is get some classic Neosporin ointment or any topical antibiotic ointment, it can be store brand too, just make sure it is the ointment and not the cream. I have tried both and and ointment works MUCH better.  Put a generous amount on your cuticles where they are cracked and broken and then cover each affected finger with a band-aid.

Leave this on overnight.  The  ointment will both soften the skin and help speed the healing of the area. What most people don't realize is that the broken peeling skin often doesn't heal well because it can be mildly infected.

In the morning when you remove the bandage you will be blown away!  They will be less red and the skin will be soft.

You can repeat this step a few times until the skin around your nails has fully healed.

PREVENTING MORE DAMAGE:

To prevent your nails from chapping and peeling more, you need to keep them soft and also protect them from cold weather.

If cuticle oil isn't enough, you may want to combine it with a cuticle cream.  The benefit of a cream is that it is thicker, so it will sit on top of the skin and protect it from drying out. The best method is putting it on after your cuticle oil, so it seals in all that moisture.

If it is cold out, be sure to put cuticle cream on before you go outside, and always ALWAYS wear gloves.  If you do both of those things, you will prevent them from becoming chapped up and dried out.

Also STOP PICKING THEM.  If part of your problem is a habit of picking at the cuticles, make yourself aware of what you are doing, and make an effort to stop yourself.  I know it's so hard sometimes when there is a little bit of chapped skin hanging there and you just want to pick it or rip it off!  But think of how much they will hurt and how bad they will look later.

If there is an excess of skin, you can snip it off with a cuticle scissor when you have a chance, but never bite them or pick them off.

When my cuticles were at their worst, I began carrying a small cuticle clipper in my makeup bag, so that if I was out and a cuticle was driving me insane and I couldn't resist, I could duck away to the bathroom and snip it off, instead of picking at it and making it worse.

Extreme?....Meh maybe, but it helped me get it under control.

IN A PINCH:

So you're out and you don't have your cuticle scissor and they are dry, cracked and driving you BANANAS, what do you do?

Odds are you have one of these in your pocket or purse...

or at least something similar.  Take it out and slather it on the fingers that are bothering you.  Sure you might not want to use it on your lips again after it was on your fingers, but a carmex or a chapstick is like $1-$2 tops so it's worth the sacrifice.  It can become your designated finger chapstick from here on out, does that make you feel better?  Less wasteful.

What will it do to help?  It will soften the skin a bit, it will sooth the irritation a tad and it will protect them from getting worse before you can get home and treat them properly.

THE RESULTS:

It took me a long time, and a lot of trial and error, but I have been employing this system for quite a while now, and my cuticles look pretty freakin' good.

See??

Lucky for you, you can try this without all the error!

I really hope this helps!  To those who don't have this problem it seems silly, but it really can be an awful thing.

I'll link all the things I use below, if you want to give it a shot!

Thanks for reading! <3
