Cozy Fireplace Nails- Oxblood & Gold Reverse Ombre Manicure

Today is the first day of the year that it is really chilly here.  Nothing makes me happier than that fall nip in the air, but I really wish I had a fireplace.

For now I made myself cozy with an at home fireplace inspired manicure! That's kind of the same thing right?  Oh come one just humor me a little....

How cool is that?  It really reminds me of fire and it is even nicer in person, I swear!  It is always so exciting to me when I have an idea in my mind of what I want something to look like, and It actually turns out that way.  As soon as these were done I ran and grabbed the camera because I was so pumped to share it.

The best part is, it was super easy!

You will need:

1. A Burgundy or oxblood nail polish with a creme finish.

I used Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in "Cinna Snap"

You could use any burgundy, even if it has a shimmer finish.  I just like the contrast between the glittery gold and the creme finish of this polish.

2. A gold pigment, glitter or loose eyeshadow

I used Sugarpill "Goldilux" loose eyeshadow

You can use any gold glitter or pigment, or even a pressed gold eyeshadow if you don't mind crushing a little bit of it up to dust it on the top of your nails.

3. An eyeliner brush or any small-ish brush.

I Used my Real Techniques "Pixel Point Liner Brush"

I don't use this for eyeliner, so I have repurposed it as my nail art brush.  I also use it to clean up around the edges of my manicure with some remover when I'm all done.

You probably don't want to use your brush for eyeliner again after you dip it in nail polish remover.  I mean I guess if you washed it it might be ok. I don't know about you but I'm not personally too keen on jamming even trace amounts of acetone into my eye though. So why not err on the side of caution, don't you think?

Plus your friends will think you are super creative and all DIY-y if you have a brush designated just for your nail art.

4. A Top Coat

I used Essie "3 Way Glaze" as both a top coat and a base coat.

How to make the magic happen:

To start off, just paint your nails us usual with your burgundy color.  While it is still sticky but not super wet, dust a tiny bit of your gold pigment around the base of your nail right near the cuticle with the small brush.

With the same brush gently drag it down about 1/4 of the way down the nail.
Essentially what you are creating is a reverse ombre effect.

Next apply the top coat  as you normally would but a little slower and more gently.  This will help spread the finer bits of pigment a little further down the nail, and mix it a little further into the burgundy, giving it a more gradual transition.

And Voila!  Done.

So simple, and super pretty for fall even if you do have a real fireplace.

Give it a try, and let me know how it goes!

What's in my makeup bag. Must have products for every day.

What's in my bag? Usually everything from aspirin to spare socks. My boyfriend calls me Felix the cat.  But what makes it into the makeup bag is another story.  I have a very high standard for what becomes an every day product for me, so you can rest assured that what is in my makeup bag is of quality.

I had every intention of doing a nail art post today, but as most of you know hurricane sandy is making a mess of the North East, and as I live in New York City, lighting is not at it's best today for photos.  As  a matter of fact, I'm hoping I can get this post up before the power goes out.

A few days ago a lovely friend requested that I do a "what's in my bag" post, so here it comes.  The Products that make the cut...well SOME of them.  I realize that if I list them all in one post you guys are going to be SO bored, so for part one I will only list the things I literally use every day.  I will make another post this week with the things you need for a night out.

These are all my exact favorite brands and colors but you can change them to suit your coloring and your budget, this also serves as a list of what types of products I think are best to have on hand on a daily basis.

When it comes to foundation I tend to switch around from time to time.  Sometimes I use just tinted moisturizer, sometimes a full coverage cream, sometimes a liquid.  But my holy grail foundation that I can not be without is Make Up Forever HD invisible cover foundation in #115.

It looks so natural, so perfect, and wears really comfortably.  And it stays all day.  Totally my "Holy Grail" foundation.

Nothing adds a little flair to your face like a winged eye.  Every woman should have a black liquid or gel liner that she is familiar and comfortable with.  Mine is Stila Stay All Day waterproof liquid liner in "Jet Black".  It is a liner pen, which I find is the easiest when applying it to yourself.  If you can draw a line on paper, you can draw one on your eye with this liner.

This one also pulls double duty because it is great for tight-lining too. Just a little touch in the base of your lashes for a polished, natural look that won't transfer to your lower water line.

Even with a perfect winged liner, you will look pretty jacked up without some mascara.  I want you all to raise your right hand and repeat after me..."I will never, under any circumstances, for any reason, ever, even when faced with death, wear a bold eye look without mascara, especially if I have fair colored eyelashes.  This is my oath"  I'm of the belief that there are no real hard and fast rules in the world of makeup, but unless you are a genius makeup artist you probably will not pull off a bold eye without mascara.

Mascara is one of those things that I find is actually better from the drugstore brands.  In my opinion you can not get any better than Maybelline "The Falsies" Waterproof Mascara in "Black Drama"  It really does make your lashes look fake...that sounds weird but I mean that in a good way.   And it is such a good price you can buy five of them and leave them everywhere so you never have to break that oath you took.  Win-win.

Liquid liner is good, but for your waterline you need a good pencil.  You should have one good dark brown or black pencil, and one light colored pencil in a flesh tone, or a champagne color.  My two picks are both Urban Decay 24/7 Glide on eye liner in "Perversion" (Black) and "Mignight Cowboy" (a pearly cream color)

...and while searching for a link to midnight cowboy I think they may have discontinued it NOOOOOOOO! Why would you ruin my life like this UD?  I will have to scour e-bay and report back to you on what I find.  Man that is a bummer.

For blush and bronzer I swear I am not trying to be stereotypical. I really do use Nars "Org**m" Blush and Benefit "Hula" Bronzer every day.  I often get annoyed at how many bloggers recommend those.  It like really guys, are there no other blushes and bronzers on the market?? So I understand if you want to cyber punch me right now, but I didn't want to lie to you either.

They both really are good products. But basically what you need is a nice glowy blush that compliments your skin and a MATTE bronzer.  Shimmer bronzer has it's place in the world but it is so much safer to go matte.

Last but not least (Because I am on borrowed time here, I think we're the only people in the city with electricity I swear) a comfortable sheer, pink gloss. C.O. Bigelow Mentha Lip Tint in "Magenta Mint" is my absolute favorite.  I have a thing for minty glosses and this one has just the right amount of shine and pink so it fits the bill.

You can get it at Bath and Body works or online here.  Super cheap too!

I'll be back later in the week, if I don't wash away, with the Must have products for a night out.
Stay dry everyone!

Maple Coconut DIY Hair Mask

You never know what you will come up with when you combine poking around on the internet and playing around with the things in your kitchen.

I have been using unrefined virgin coconut oil as a mask in my hair for a few years now, and I swear by it.  It's so moisturizing.  It also smells amazing, like seriously so good you will have a hard time not eating it.

One day while creeping around on the internet I read that maple syrup is also good for your hair.  I had a really hard time imagining myself pouring syrup on my head like some sort of human-waffle hybrid who is somehow vain enough to put a treatment on it's hair.  So I decided I needed to mix it with something and make it more of a mask.  In a moment of genius as if the stars were aligning (whatever that means) I had the brilliant idea to mix it in with my coconut oil.  I'm sure someone else out there has already done this, but who knows I may have invented it.  I certainly never heard it anywhere else before.

When I mixed the syrup with the oil, which was room temperature and therefore a strange, halfway between solid and liquid consistency, it made a goopy, jelly-ish concoction and it smelled GLORIOUS!  I eagerly slathered it all over my hair, tied it up and read a book for a while.

The nice thing was that it sort of dried to a bendable plastic texture that was easy to get out of the ponytail but also didn't mush itself all over the couch as I was reading.  And it smelled like an oatmeal raisin cookie, which is weird because it has neither oatmeal nor raisins in it.  The downside was that my dog kept trying to eat my head.

After about an hour I washed and dried my hair normally and it was so soft and shiny! Am I a genius?!?  Well it just took me about three tries to spell the word genius so I'm guessing probably not, but I made a nice mask thats for sure.

Here is my exact recipe:

Mix equal parts Virgin Unrefined Coconut Oil and Maple Syrup. Both items I used in my example are USDA organic, but you don't need to go out of your way to get organic items, this just happens to be what I had on hand.  However, you do need to get real maple syrup, not maple "FLAVORED" syrup like Aunt Jemima or Mrs. Butterworth.  If the bottle is shaped like an old time-y fat lady you most likely have the wrong thing.

It might take some vigorous mixing to get it smooth, but try your best to get the lumps out.

(Side Note:  Coconut oil is a funny substance, the temperature difference between having it fully solid and fully liquid is like .000000001º.  Obviously I'm speaking in hyperbole but, somewhere in the middle is best for this mask because too cold will make it hard to scoop out and mix, but too warm will make it messy to apply, room temperature should be just about right.)

Make enough that you can cover your whole head in it pretty liberally.  Get a good coat on there.  Don't be shy, get in there with it. Obviously more hair means more mask, but you could always mix some more if you need it.

Now just slather it on, live your life for an hour and wash and style your hair as usual.

I like to do this once every few weeks, or whenever I feel like my hair needs some extra help.  It usually brings my hair from a B right back to an A+

Happy Masking!

Shake Up Your Makeup! Metallic Highlighting

Doing your makeup every day often becomes a pretty robotic routine.  If you reach for the same items and apply them the same way it is easy and quick and you can be confident that you don't look like a fool...I mean someone would have told you by now right? Right.

But that can be so boring.  Even if it looks good, you don't feel special and pretty if you look the same as you do every day, no?  You don't wear the same shoes every day, why is it ok to wear the same makeup ever day?  The answer is "It's not ok!" Shake it up a little bit.  It's for your own good.

I always try to find little ways to spice up my daily routine.  I especially like things I can add on as a transition from day to night.

This little trick fits both of those criteria.  It is highlighting in GOLD.  Most of us already add a touch of a highlight color on our tear duct and under our brow in some sort of reflective, pale color.  So how much more effort would it be to replace this pale color with a nice metallic cream?

Recently after much himming and hawing and drooling over it, I finally picked up Illamasqua Liquid metal in the color Solstice.  It is a creamy pigment with a very metallic gold finish.  After playing with it for a while I decided to use it as a highlighter on the very simple natural eye and red lip I was wearing, and OMG I loved it.

Seriously, how pretty is that? It's like morning sunlight bouncing off a Unicorn.

And it took me literally 30 seconds to add it to the makeup I already had on.  You have 30 seconds to make yourself feel just a teeny bit more glam, you deserve it...I think.  Then again you could be a murderer, what do I know?  Murderers need not apply.

The only thing about the liquid metals is that they don't set, so you may want to set it with a similar gold powder on the eyes if you want the look to last.  I would recommend a pigment like Sugarpill's Goldilux or Mac Reflects in Antique Gold (That is a touch darker though).

There are also a few other cream products that will give you a similar effect to the Liquid Metal, such as the Gold in the Make Up Forever Flash Palette, or Make Up Forever Aqua Cream in #11 (This one does set actually so no need to worry about a pigment)  I find that none of these are as metallic as the Illamasqua Liquid Metals.

For the punchiest most metallic result that will stay on the whole night  I would go for Illamasqua Solstice with Sugarpill Goldilux layered on top.  On the lip it stayed the whole night for me, without anything over it, but you could do the same here.

You can even just use a gold shadow on it's own for a more subtle look, if that's your thing.

So if you have been bored and stuck in a makeup rut lately, give it a shot.  It's so simple and so fast literally everyone has the time and skills to pull it off.

Clear That Skin! - Part One Aspirin Facial Mask

A common question asked of makeup experts is "How do I get flawless skin?" and those out there who are looking to sell products, or who perhaps simply don't know any better, will often suggest a certain foundation or concealer to cover up your blemishes.  While there are many many beautiful cosmetics out there which will help to even out your skin's appearance, I think we can all agree that nothing looks better than clear skin, even with makeup over it.   Some of them will even make your blemishes worse...It's a vicious cycle were talking about here, people and ending the cycle is no joke.

No matter how you slice it products will look best when you aren't cultivating a pimple farm under them, trust me.  I know how hard it can be to deal with acne, I did it for years and I still deal with it from time to time.  The goal here is not to have unrealistic expectations of how to fix things, it is just to make the best of what we've got.

The truth of the matter is there is no single thing that is going to clear your skin up in a day, or magically fix it instantly (Even if that thing you pinned on Pinterest said there is).   My plan is to lay out a few different changes you can make which will help get things under control, without having you spend hundreds of dollars on some acne fighting system which may or may not work.   This Aspirin scrub/mask is the first installment of a series I am going to share with you all.

As a matter of fact, this trick can cost around two dollars.   Who can argue with that?   If it doesn't work, big whoop you're out a 2 bucks and you can still use it for a headache.

What you will need is a bottle of Aspirin. UNLESS YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO ASPRIN.  If you are allergic to taking it orally, you will be allergic on your skin too!!

Generic is fine, I usually get the Walgreens brand which sells at two bottles for $2.00.   Just make sure they are UNCOATED or at the very least "Micro-coated" and they need to be tablets, not gels or liquids.   You will also need your regular face wash, as long as it is not an acne clearing wash.   Something gentle is best.

Last but not least you need water, and your face.

You are going to take a few aspirin and put them in the palm of your hand. 2-3 should be more than enough... unless you have a tremendous head, in which case use some more I guess.

Use your judgement, you know your own head better than I do.

Gently run a little warm water into your hand and let it pool up around the tablets.   In less than a minute you will see them begin to break down. Feel free to mush them up with your finger to help them along.

It should look something like this

Carefully drain the water leaving the granules of dissolved tablet in your palm.  Add a pump or a dollop of your gentle cleanser, mix them up a little and apply the mix to your face.

And Neutrogena "Deep Clean Cream Cleanser" have worked fine too.

Add the cleanser and mix it in real nicey nice...

Wait 2-3 minutes with the mixture on your skin.  Then in gentle circular motions scrub it into your skin and rinse it all off with nice cool water.   Don't go crazy and press really hard or scrub for 10 minutes or your skin will get very dry.

Aspirin is essentially Salicylic acid in tablet form, if that name looks familiar, its because you have seen it on every anti-acne product since the dawn of man.  Acne products can make you a chapped, dry mess if overused, and so can this. It works great but it can really dry things up, so calm it down and don't go buckwild on your face. You'll make things worse, seriously.

Additionally you will also see Salicylic acid in anti-aging products. It is a very good exfoliant, which the experts tell us is good for keeping ourselves looking young.  Makeup doesn't look good if you slather it over wrinkled old leather either, take note mature ladies, this can be helpful for you too!

The last step is to moisturize. Obviously use something that works for your skin, and doesn't cause breakouts, duh.   If you struggle with acne you probably already own something like this.   If not then thats a whole other blog topic, but you need to be moisturizing.

And Voila! Your face should feel really soft and clean.

I like to do this treatment about once a week.  I'm not a skin expert, this is all trial and error, so experiment and see what works for you. Everyone's skin is different, but simple, cheap tricks are usually worth a try!  Hope it works for you.

 Stay pretty =)

How to Get Eyelashes to Stay Curled

How many of you out there have this happen?  You sit down and do your makeup, curl your lashes with a great deal of care and apply a coat of mascara.  Only to discover in mere moments you have a droopy, sloppy, un-uniform fringe of lashes just uncurled and mocking you in the mirror?

Lashes, you cold as ice...

For those of us with stick straight lashes, this gruesome horror story is a daily reality.  OK maybe thats a touch dramatic, but it really is frustrating right?

Truth is it is super easy to get your eyelashes to stay curled, with a just a couple of tiny tweaks.

First and foremost, get an eyelash curler that fits the curve and length of your eye.  If you are using one that is too rounded/flat or too long /short for your particular eye ball, and the way said eyeball is situated in that pretty cranium of yours, it is going to miss some lashes.  When you miss lashes, they stay straight which does not help you create that upswept frame of perfectly uniform fluttering lashes we all lust after.

Now you are saying "This is all very helpful, but the rest of my lashes are just going to plop down where they came from anyway! Stop toying with my emotions, you monster!"
Calm down! I'm not finished! Jesus...
Here is the real secret. It's so simple you are going to punch yourself in the face...
USE WATERPROOF MASCARA!  Seriously, thats it.  That is the whole trick.

Think about it, if you do your hair and then you slap something watery on it will it hold it shape? I don't think so, buddy.  It's the same with eyelashes. Regular mascara is water based, as a matter of fact as I looked around the interwebs at various products, water is the first ingredient in most of them.  Waterproof mascara is not water based, and in fact it is meant to keep water out. So not only will it not CAUSE your lashes to droop, it will also keep outside sources of water (like humid weather) from drooping them as well! Hoorah!

Left: Waterproof   Right: Regular

Waterproof

Regular...look how sad they are.

If you are really serious (Read: Neurotic) about keeping them perfectly curled, like I am, you can curl one eye, apply mascara immediately and then curl the other eye and apply the mascara there.  (As opposed to curling both and then applying mascara to both, you feel me?)  This is helpful only for those of us with really stubbornly straight lashes, which might fall down a little in the time it takes to do the other eye.  If this sounds insane to you, I swear I actually have this problem.

A lot of people think using waterproof mascara will ruin your lashes because it is hard to remove and you will pull them out and blah blah blaaaahhh just shut up.  I have been using it routinely for years and my lashes are doing just peachy. And I REALLY go wild and get a whole mess of mascara on there too, we're talking several layers here.  You just have to get a good remover and be a little patient.  Bioderma is excellent, but if you are looking for a drugstore item to get it done, I recommend Neutrogena Oil Free Eye Makeup Remover on a cotton pad.

For those of you who have naturally curled eyelashes, go ahead and use regular old water based mascara.  It will do you just fine, except everyone will know you've been crying over that Sarah McLachlan commercial with the one eyed pug again....

So give this little tip a try everyone, and let me know how it goes!

Mac Pro Products online....WHAAAAAT?!

Just a quick update, in case anyone out there has not heard yet. Mac pro products are now available through their online store. So exciting! Check out the announcement from temptalia for details. I see some Reflects Glitters in my future...

Tarte LipSurgence Amused Dupe!

A few months back in my March Birchbox, I received the Tarte LipSurgence lip stain pencil in "Amused" and I really liked the product, but it definitely had a number of problems. The color was nice, it smelled great and it made my lips feel a little hydrated, but the first thing that happened was the tip of it broke off, leaving me with a whole lot less product.  At a price point of $24 I would say this is unacceptable, but since i got it in my $10 Birchbox, I wasn't too upset.

I wound up using the whole thing, and even went to Sephora and bought a new one with my own hard earned 24 bucks.  When I got it home, same thing.  Tip broke off on the first use...what the...??  This time I was a little mad but I went about using it the same way I used the last one only to discover a few days later that the entire thing had melted into a puddle of nothingness inside its tube.  It wasn't even hot out!
I am not pleased...

But since I had become accustomed to having a minty, hydrating lip stain crayon at my disposal, what was a girl to do? I went about using it as best I could by dipping my pinky nail in and putting it on that way, but it just wasn't the same.  I needed a dupe.

Luckily I was in CVS recently, perusing the cosmetics sales and I came across the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains...wow that name is a mouthful!  They were $8.99 and buy one get one half off so I figured I would give it a shot, and here is how it measured up.

I chose the color "Smitten" which seemed the closest to "Amused" Not too far off, maybe a touch less bright.

Tarte "Amused" on left Revlon "Smitten" on right
under artificial light

"Amused" on left "Smitten" on right
natural sunlight

Once swatched they are actually a lot closer in color than I even anticipated, Score! I would say Tarte LipSurgence is a softer formula and applies a bit more glossy, but in a stain that will only last a short time anyway.
They both smell minty and nice, they both feel great on the lips.  The Just Bitten stain scores major points for not breaking immediately which most likely has to do with the slightly harder, less glossy formula, but I think that is a fair trade.

"But what about the stain?" you say...

The stain left by "Amused" left and "Smitten" right

It stains better too!  BOOM Tarte, you have been replaced.  I am usually a complete snob when it comes to buying drugstore products, but this time it wins hands down. Lesson learned.

By the way you can also get them online at Ulta.com and I think they are even running the BOGO half off deal right now too.

Now my lips will be pinker and my wallet will be fatter...
Who am I kidding? I totally already spent the money I saved on more makeup...oops.

Make Up Forever Aqua Rouge

I don't know if its just me, but in my experience there is no such thing as a long wearing lipstick.  I mean obviously there are some that last a lot longer than others, and some that wear off in a more desirable pattern than others, but nothing really wears like iron for me.  I usually end up looking like a drank my weight in red cool aid within 3-4 hours.  Am I the only one with this issue?? Maybe it's a body chemistry thing, or maybe other people just don't eat or drink after they put on lipstick.

As I'm sure you all know deep red lips are SO IN this fall, and being that I'm a sucker for bold lipstick and also for anything burgundy I had to find a way to make this work for me. So last week I picked up a tube of the new Make Up Forever Aqua Rouge lipstick in "Dark Raspberry" and I'm in looooove!  In my experience MUFE is the benchmark when it comes to long lasting and waterproof.  I went swimming in their brow corrector and it didn't budge (don't judge me, nobody wants to swim with jacked up eyebrows, come on!).  Lets be real, this is not on my eyebrows, it  goes on my lips where I put greasy foods and hot caffeinated beverages all day long.  It didn't stay 100% perfect all day, or even all night, but after 4 and a half hours and eating and drinking it was still decent enough that I felt presentable in public.

I applied it over Urban Decay Lip Primer Potion, which I felt really helped it go on evenly.  When I first swatched it on my bare lips it looked a bit patchy, but that is the case with most color stay lipsticks.

This is how it looked freshly applied.

Freshly Applied

Please excuse the crap-tastic photo quality.  I wanted to give an accurate account of how this wore in real life, so as I went about my day I snapped photos of it on my iPhone.  I figured I would look psychotic trying to take pictures of my own face with a huge DSLR in public...

1.5 Hours later after a snack

This is how it looked after about an hour and a half.  I had just eaten a snack, and wanted to check out how it held up.  Pretty much identical to when I first put it on...well played MUFE.

After about 4 Hours and a big hearty dinner.

So after dinner (And after it got dark, hence the different lighting)  it was no longer perfect, as you can see it sort of moved around and got a bit patchy.  The patches looked much worse in person actually.  It certainly wasn't worn off, but I had to take my finger and sorta buff it back into place. After that it was completely acceptable again, just not super gorgeous like it was before I stuffed face.

And that was how it stayed until I took it off before bed.  It was on my lips and functioning at an acceptable level for about 7 hours.  In my world this is a miracle.

The icing on the cake is that it wore comfortably and didn't even dry out my lips!
Have I found my new holy grail long wearing lipstick?  Very possibly.

Stay tuned, lipstick lovers, soon I will share my tips and tricks for keeping other types of lipstick on for as long as possible, among many other really fun things!

Let's Get This Started!

Hello Everyone!

So, being that this is my very first post on my very first blog (Unless you count live journal all those years ago...which I do not hahaha) I'm just going to lay it all out there and let you guys know what I want this blog to be about.

I have always been a tiny bit obsessed with makeup, and by "tiny bit" I actually mean a "big fat, giant, huge bit".  I recall buying my first lipstick when I was around 11 years old (It was Clinique Black Honey, which I still love by the way)  and it grew and grew from there.  Along the way I have gone through TONS of phases and changes in my makeup habits.  From my prolonged "glitter/feather lashes/ heavy eyeliner" phase to my "almost nothing but the essentials" phase and everything in between.  At this point in my life I have realized that it is actually the one passion that I have always held on to, and I should probably make a career out of it.  Which is why I have started a new, and hopefully successful journey towards becoming a professional MUA.  It is a slow process, but I will keep all of you posted about that as it grows as well.
The one thing that ties all these phases together is that all of them have taught me at least a little something along the way.  Which brings us here, right now, to this blog.

I feel like I have a little arsenal of beauty tips and tricks.  Some of you probably know a lot of them already, and maybe some of you can even teach me a thing or two, but I figure why keep this stuff to ourselves?  I have days when I think of some little trick that I never did before, and I want to run around and tell all of my friends about it...but a lot of them don't REALLY care or have much to say about it at all, and they will probably never get anything out of it, so why not let a bunch of strangers out there on the internet in on the action?

The plan is as follows.  A few times a week, maybe more, maybe less,  I will blog about the latest makeup and beauty related thing on my mind.  Maybe a new trick, maybe a fun new trend, some nail art, a makeup look, a review on something, or even a really good dupe I found ( Hint Hint I have one of those lined up for you guys already).

So stay tuned, I think this is going to be a lot of fun!
