Product Showdown: Revlon Lip Butters VS Maybelline Color Whispers

So, Maybelline recently came out with a product called Color Whispers, which is basically their answer to Revlon's Lip Butters.  As soon as I heard of them I knew I wanted to compare the two.

I do like the Lip Butters, but they were not what I was hoping they would be. I was hoping for a tinted lip balm that added a sheer, but punchy color to the lip.  They turned out to be more like a hydrating lipstick, which is nice, but not what I had gotten my hopes up for.

There are a bunch of things like what I was looking for on the market, from drugstore to high end, but I'm always on the lookout for more options. I also like knowing which drugstore items perform best, because that way if I ever need to grab something in a pinch I don't end up with a flop!

Color Whispers are exactly what I was hoping Revlon Lip Butters would be!  They are sheer, but noticeable color.  They are fairly hydrating and easy to apply.  Essentially what I wanted was something to add color, that was not a gloss, but I could pop it on my lips real quick without worrying too much about being neat.  You know, slap it on while running for the train and be on my way with nice pink lips!

Top: A Plum Prospect
Bottom: Cherry on Top

I chose a pink color and a plum color, and so far I like them both.  As you can see they are pretty sheer, but still bright.

Top: Maybelline Color Whisper "Cherry On Top"
Bottom: Revlon Lip Butter "Lollipop"

Here are the two pinks that I own from each line, side by side.  As you can see the Revlon Lip Butter is far more opaque and pigmented.  It's a really incredible color, and I have gotten a ton of use out of it, but I use it more like a lipstick, I neatly apply it in the mirror before I leave, and fix it carefully in the bathroom while out.  The Color Whisper is something I would keep in the pocket of my purse to pop on when my face needs a little pick-me-up on the go.

Left: Maybelline Color Whisper "Cherry On Top"
Right: Revlon Lip Butter "Lollipop"

As far as the packaging, they are similar.  Roll up tube, slanted top, and a cap that corresponds to the color inside.  Personally I prefer the cap on the Color Whispers, just because I like the design better (You can refer to the photo at the top of the post to see the design) Functionally they are pretty much the same.

So whats my final answer? They are different.  They are marketed as the same type of product but in my eyes, they aren't.

In the end I will still use and probably buy more of the Revlon Lip Butters, but I'm also glad that Color Whispers are available, because they fill a different niche in my makeup needs.

OCC Lip Tar Combinations (With Swatches!)

OCC Lip Tar is one of my favorite products EVER.  It wears for hours, you only need a tiny bit to get full coverage, it's comfortable on the lips, and best of all- you can easily mix your own custom colors.  My only problem is, I forget which combinations I made and liked, and I find myself staring at a bag full of lip tars like a doofus, just overwhelmed and confused without time to sit and mix a bunch to figure out which combination I want.

As you have probably figured out by now, I am an overly-organized geeky weirdo and so I decided I would take pictures of all my combinations so I have a reference...and then I realized that was obviously something that needed to be shared on my blog!  I mean I can't be the only one who has this problem right?

So what I have done is broken it down into five categories Nudes, Bright Pinks, Red- Pinks, Reds, and Blackened colors.

From those five categories, I swatched my favorite four for you, and from each of those four I chose my favorite and did a lip swatch of that...whew.

Confused? Me too, I've out-geeked myself.   I'll just show you the photos, they speak for themselves.

Oh and FYI the combinations I made are pretty much equal parts of each color, but you can adjust the amount however your little heart desires, and in that case these photos will help give you an idea of how the color combinations interact when you mix them.

Nudes

My Favorite Nude: Kava Kava + Ophelia

Why is this my favorite nude combination?  Simply because I find it most flattering on my coloring, if were being honest here.  I am very fair and have dark hair and eyes so most nudes make me look like I recently washed up on the side of a river.  This one is nicer on me because it has a touch of pink from Ophelia and a bit of warm carmel tone from the Kava Kava.

The other three are really nice too, it's just a matter of what type of nude you prefer!

SIDE NOTE: OCC Lip Tars make great nudes for girls who have very pink pigmented lips and find that nudes never look like nudes on them.  The extreme pigmentation really blanks out any natural lip color!

Bright Pinks

My Favorite Pink: Ophelia + Queen

All of these were so nice it was really hard to choose a favorite, but Ophelia + Queen makes a really wearable version of a coral pink, which I love for spring and summer.

Red-Pinks

Favorite Red-Pink: Pretty Boy + NSFW

Again I love all of these, but c'mon look at how nice this combination is!  It is so versatile too, I feel like it can work in any season.  It reminds me of delicious raspberry jam...ok now i'm hungry.

Reds

Favorite Red: NSFW + Starling

I'm a sucker for most reds, but the combo of NSFW and Starling has a special place in my heart.  It is dark without being vampy, and it also has a sophisticated vintage feel to it.  It makes me feel like Judy Garland... except I still can't sing.

Blackened Colors

Favorite Blackened Color: Tarred + NSFW

OK this is the only batch where the mix isn't really 50-50.  Tarred is a strong, highly pigmented black so it kinda takes over if you aren't careful.  I would say these are more like 70-30 (70% other color, 30% Tarred)

It's funny what colors do when you add black to them, it brings out tones in them that you didn't even know were there.  Tarred + NSFW won as my favorite because its so deep and rich, but I also really like the other combinations as well.

If you want to experiment you can find OCC Lip Tars here :

I plan on picking up a few new colors (including the new "metallurgy" collection which has a fun metallic finish) at IMATS so I may do a second installment of this after I get my hands on those, let me know in the comments if you would like to see that, and if there are any combinations you want to see in particular!

How to Make Any Eyeshadow into a Liquid Eyeliner!

What if I told you that you can spend 10 bucks and make all of your eyeshadows double as liquid eyeliners?  Well I am.  That is what I am telling you.

It's called eyeliner sealer (or sometimes sealing gel) and it is a makeup junkie's dream come true!  Imagine any of your eyeshadows, pigments and glitters available in eyeliner form at your beckon call, that's the dream folks.

To use it, all you have to do is load your eyeliner brush with whatever powder formula you like and then dip it into a little of the sealer and mush it around a bit.  You can do this on the back of your hand, or a piece of plastic, or a palette (I just use my hand) and voila!  In seconds you have an eyeliner, and not just an eyeliner but a long wearing, water resistant one.  I know! I almost fainted too.

In case you don't believe me I have taken it upon myself to swatch a bunch of fun eyeshadows and glitters with eyeliner sealer to show you just how magical it can be.

The swatches are all done with one layer of product, which I have applied with a thick brush to make them more visible for you.  Don't fret though, the lines can be very thin if you use a thin liner brush or angled brush!

From TheBalm "The Balm and the Beautiful" Palette
(AKA Cast your shadow palette)

From the Urban Decay "Naked" Palette

From the Urban Decay "Vice" Palette

Also From the Urban Decay "Vice" Palette

Top three are fine glitters and the bottom one is a loose pigment.

What I Have Learned Through Trial and Error:

1. Higher quality shadows work better.  Probably because they are more pigmented, because it seemed like less pigmented shadows looked uneven and watery.

2.  If you use a glitter, try to use one that isn't too chunky.  Finer glitters take better to eyeliners in general,  larger bits of glitter don't really make a good line and often just look clumpy.  Medium glitters would work ok, but you might want to layer them over another liner to get a defined shape.

3.  If you are having a hard time getting a fine, sharp line, make your mixture thinner (aka more sealer less shadow).  If it then seems sheer just let it dry and apply another layer.  The thinner consistency will help you get better control over the flow of the product.

4.  "But couldn't I just do this with water?" I asked that too, and the answer is:  Well...yeah technically, and the same goes for using a makeup setting spray to make a liner, but it will not be nearly as vibrant, pigmented or smooth as using a sealer.  It will also come off very quickly and be much more difficult to apply.  Basically it won't ever look as good or wear as well and it just plain pales in comparison.

If you want to give it a try, here is the one I use:

Kryolan Cake Eye Liner Sealer

You can also find these two in stores at your local Sephora for a few more dollars. I have not, however tested them so I'm not sure if they perform the exact same way.  I'm thinking they are fairly similar though.

Illamasqua Sealing Gel
Make Up Forever Aqua Seal

Have fun, and let me know if you give it a try!
