How to stop your hairstyle from falling flat!

If you have naturally straight hair, smooth hair, fine hair, long hair or all of the above, you may find that when you style it, it goes flat before you can even leave the house.  This can be especially bad when it's humid out.

I have thick, long, straight hair, so I fall into this category threefold.  And let me tell you, it's annooooooooyiiiiiiinnnnngg.

I am not a hairdresser, just someone who has done some research over time and figured out what works.  As of right now, this is kinda workin' for me and I will walk you through my process step by step.

Start with freshly washed, wet hair.  I ran a little bit of Macadamia Healing Oil Treatment  through my ends as a leave in to keep them from looking all dry and nasty.

Now it's time for mousse!  Mousse is designed specifically for adding volume to hair, so it is your best friend if your hair tends to go flat.  As you can see above I take a generous dollop and put it in all over my roots in my crown area.

Once I have applied the mousse I run my hands through the roots to distribute it even further.  Once that's done it's time to dry.  The key here it to dry the hair in the opposite direction of how the hair will fall.  So on the sides where the hair is going to be laying downward, I blow dry it up.  For the very top section I like to flip my head over and dry it upside down, but that proved very difficult to get a photo of so you may have to use your imagination.

You can dry the ends as you normally would, I just quickly dried them with a round brush because I am going to style it more later.  At this point your hair should look remotely like the picture above, a little volume, but nothing crazy . . .but we want crazy so on to the next step.

Now It's time for some dry shampoo, and you're probably thinking I'm nuts because I just washed my hair.  But the idea is that the dry shampoo adds texture and volume, which we need.  It also helps absorb any excess oil that develops throughout day, which can also cause some droopage.

I am using Batiste Deep & Dark Brown, which I am loving at the moment, but whatever dry shampoo you prefer will do the trick.

Just like the mousse you want to distribute the dry shampoo all over your crown, and then spread it through by running your fingers through it.

Now as you can see from that last photo we're starting to look a little crazy, and that's a good sign.

You have to figure that no matter what you do, your hair is going to fall a bit after the initial styling, so let it start falling from an absurd height and it will end up right where you want it.  That's how I figure it anyway.

So now that you're looking a wee bit crazy it's time to style.  While I style my hair I like to section it off and work on the bottom first, the important tip here is to clip to top half up so that it is holding up the volume at the top.

This stops it from falling while styling, and it also allows time for it to be fully cooled in that position, which will help it set and stay longer.

Now you can style your hair as you normally would, and if you want to backcomb or tease it, you can. The extra lift and texture we added will help keep the backcombing in all day.

When you finish styling set the whole thing with some hairspray and you're good to go.  From my experience this little system will help keep at least SOME of the volume in your hair, even on the most sticky and humid days.

I hope this helps, and if you have any tips on how you keep YOUR hair from going flat, let me know in the comments, I love learning new tricks!

    1. Unfortunately the way I have things set up right now the only way to follow it is to go on your blogger account and add the URL to your reading list. You can also like the facebook page https://www.facebook.com/msquinnface, I update that every time I post something new.

Things are kinda under construction at the moment, I'm in the process of redesigning and switching over to wordpress, so it will all be laid out nicer, and easier to follow ASAP! =)
