How sick are you of seeing the word coconut in my DIY posts? Well guess what, I’m not sorry. Coconut oil is awesome. I even put it in my coffee every single morning. Feel free to replace the coconut oil in any of my recipes with whatever natural oil you have on hand, like olive oil. I know that coconut oil can be expensive if you don’t live near a Trader Joe’s. Just be warned that it won’t smell quite as delicious.
So my hands have been suffering lately. I guess it’s the colder-than-usual winter I’m experiencing. But I’ve noticed that the skin on the sides of my fingers was looking dry and cracked. So gross. So I played around with a few concoctions and I have one that’s been doing the trick, and its really simple to make. I used fresh squeezed lemon to make sure that I got all of the exfoliating benefits of the natural acids and stuff, but this results in a very mild lemon smell. If you are looking to make this more intensely lemony, feel free to add a few drops of lemon extract. That should do the trick.
- Sugar - I used coconut sugar because that’s what I had but brown or white sugar will work as well.
- Kosher Salt
- The Juice of one Lemon
- Coconut Oil
- A Jar or Container (I like cute glass ones but anything you have will work)
Combine 1 1/2 cups of your coconut or other sugar and 2 tbs Kosher Salt in a bowl and stir them together. As I have mentioned in other scrub recipes, I like to add kosher salt so that there are different sized granules. I feel like this makes a more effective scrub, but if you don’t have kosher salt on hand just replace it with more of your sugar.
Once your sugar and salt are all combined add your lemon juice and about 1 cup of coconut oil. You can adjust how much oil you use depending on how liquidy you want the scrub. This will also depend on how much juice you get out of your lemon, so just adjust accordingly. You can also add more sugar or salt if it’s too runny. You get the point, it’s not an exact science.
