When I first saw sheet masks I thought they were a total gimmick. Like oh yeah let me put this Michael Meyers sh*t on my face that will totally help my skin. FOH. But after using them and doing some research I realized that the sheet actually makes a big difference. It allows you to keep ingredients on your face without them dripping away or evaporating or being diluted in a base that will change their effects. It’s actually pretty brilliant and I’m an asshole. The only remaining problem is that sheet masks can get pretty darn expensive if you want to do them regularly. Good news is you can make a DIY sheet mask and it can be super effective…and you still get to look like Michael Meyers so its a win all the way around.
This particular sheet mask is made of two very simple but effective ingredients. Watermelon juice and honey. Watermelon is hydrating and soothing and has a ton of vitamins and minerals that are effective on the skin and honey has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties as well as being a natural humectant. It’s a really nice one two punch.
All you need is:
- Watermelon Juice (You can literally use what runs off a watermelon that you are going to eat. Those babies are juicy)
- Honey
- Paper Towels, Muslin Clothe or Cotton Squares
When I was setting out to try this the first time I thought of being fancy using some muslin cloth, but then I though about it for a moment. If I were going to do a DIY at home and someone told me I had to go out and buy some cloth (because most people don’t have that sitting around) I wouldn’t do it. So let’s use something everyone has in their home - paper towels.
I took one small sheet (you know the select-a-size sheets) and just cut it into strips. I made two larger ones for my cheeks and three smaller ones to go across my chin, nose and forehead.
I made a mixture of
- 1/4 cup watermelon juice
- 1 Tbs Honey
Then I simple dipped each strip into the mixture and placed them on my face. (don’t get it too soaked because you’ll drip like hell. You can even squeeze a little out of need be) One across the forehead, across the nose, across the chin and then down each cheek. It looked a little something like this.
I could have probably made a skinny strip to go above my top lip as well but for some reason I didn’t think of it until i looked back at the photos. What a dummy.
The strips actually stick to the skin surprisingly well. I mean I wouldn’t go running around with them on or do jumping jacks or something but they stick to the face reasonably well. I chose to lay down so I wouldn’t have to even worry about it but realistically I think I could answer emails or watch youtube videos like this.
I left it on for around 20 minutes and my skin felt soft and bright and there was a noticeable reduction in redness.
I did find that I wanted to rinse my face with cool water once the mask was off because honey is sticky, so keep that in mind if you try this recipe.
I’m pretty excited that there’s a way to make a DIY sheet mask and I will definitely be whipping up some more mask recipes in the future. ave you guys ever tried anything like this? Tell me your favorite!
