You guys know by now that I think it’s super important to keep your cuticles healthy. If you are trying to grow your nails out, read that post that I just linked and it’s predecessor and I think it will really help you.
As far as store bought cuticle oils are concerned, I’m pretty partial to OPI avoplex because I have tried a bunch and I actually feel like some of them make my cuticles drier. Isn’t that weird? Have any of you ever experienced that? Please tell me if you have because I feel like a crazy lady. Avoplex actually moisturizes my cuticles, and I stick with it for that reason. But there is a really easy way to keep your cuticles moisturized with a DIY cuticle oil made with things you probably have in your house.
You need:
- Coconut Oil (I Buy mine at the grocery store for a little cheaper but if you don’t have it at your store then amazon is where it’s at)
- A small empty jar ( I used a cleaned out pigment jar but you can find affordable cosmetic jars in bulk online and keep them for your DIYs)
- Jojoba Oil ( Again I get mine at Trader Joe’s but if you don’t have one near you you can find it on amazon OR try something else like a nice essential oil or even a tiny tiny amount of olive oil)
I used about one teaspoon of coconut oil, but you may need more or less depending on your jar. You also may need to warm yours up to make it liquid. I only used 3-4 drops of the jojoba oil. I like to add it for a variety of different oils to penetrate the cuticle, but too much will make this very liquidy and I like it to be more like a balm.
After I add the jojoba in I like to stir it in the jar with something small like a toothpick. You want to evenly distribute the oils but you don’t want it to come spilling out of the jar, so a toothpick or something small and pokey is your best bet.
A Few Pointers:
- I like to use this DIY cuticle oil as a balm on my cuticles at home. I keep the jar on my desk and apply it when they are looking a little funky. The mixture has a balmy consistency at room temperature but because these are natural oils that aren’t stabilized with other products they will melt quickly if they get too warm so I don’t recommend bringing this in your purse or a suitcase or anything.
- You can also use this on any dry spots you may have elsewhere. I like to use it on my lips too!
- Massaging this, or even a store bought oil into your cuticles is great for stimulating blood flow which help nails grow in nice and healthy. It also feels pretty good so you can’t lose there. Cuticle massages all around!
- It may remain liquid for a while after you mix it, so if you are super impatient and need it to set RIGHT MEOW then pop it in the fridge for a few minutes and it should harden up a bit.
Happy cuticle rubbing 🙂

I definitely think that some cuticle oils are drying! I thought I was just weird so I’m relieved that I’m not the only one 🙂
Hahahaha oh thank goodness! The girls at my local salon gave me one and when I told them it made my cuticles dry they looked at me like I had three heads. Glad I’m not alone LOL
