WARNING: I’m about to blabber on about life a bit, if you just want to see some makeup, scroll down. If you want to hear me muse about life and makeup for a moment then by all means continue on and read all my brain farts about creativity and blogging and such.
When I first started blogging I used to push myself to try to do big colorful crazy makeup looks. I was never happy with how they turned out, I was working as a freelance makeup artist at the time and I wound up asking myself am I even good at makeup? Why are people hiring me if this is how the looks I do on myself turn out?
What I didn’t realize was the reason those looks turned out like crap wasn’t because I suck necessarily, it was because I wasn’t being true to myself. Big colorful crazy looks are not what I do best, I was just doing them because that’s what I thought was popular on social media and I felt like I had to do it too. I wasn’t confident in my blogging skills, and I hadn’t really figured out where my strengths lie. I should have just taken a look at what I was getting booked to do, but hindsight is 20/20.
That’s life though isn’t it? We have to take time to learn and fail a little to realize what we’re better at. My style is more “simple and classic with a little edge”. That applies to my makeup style, my fashion sense, my fine art work and my taste in home decor. I kinda finally “found myself” in all if these areas and it has all come together and now I can see that much more clearly. Those types of makeup looks might not get the most likes or shares on social media because it’s not as attention grabbing, but it’s who I am so I just gotta roll with it.
That being said, I feel like it’s time to push myself again. Not because I want to change my style, but because I want to be better and more interesting in the style that works for me. I know I’m not the most insanely talented artist on Earth, and I’m 100% cool with that. I feel like as long as I’m always learning and growing I can be happy in knowing that there are people who are always going to be better. I shouldn’t try to be as good as them at what THEY do, but I should let them inspire me to be the best version of ME. That goes for makeup, fine arts and any other creative endeavor I might pursue.
So the plan is, I’m going to make an effort to be more creative with my own makeup (because lord knows I can fall into a trap of doing it the same all the time) document it as often as possible and collect it all up for a new feature called FRIDAY FACES.
It may not happen every Friday because sometimes my life is profoundly boring and I barely wear makeup all week, but it should be a fairly regular thing.
I also feel like it’s a good opportunity for me to talk about my actual life a little more (although I swear I won’t blab this much in every post)
Anyway, enough about all that crap. here is the makeup I’ve worn lately.

Man, I cant believe this was only a week and a half ago and I was wearing a tiny leather jacket and no hat. I feel like the frigid cold and snow are like a permanent part of life right now. I wore this to go view a house and run a bunch of errands, because the husband and I are looking to buy a house, which is terrifying, and exciting and causing me to obsessively browse furniture websites.
We hated that house btw. Why do people do really bad DIY construction on otherwise beautiful homes? Like seriously, you can have all the mid century architecture and field stone hearths you want ( And I totally understand doing something yourself and saving money if you are able to do it right) but if I get there are there’s a DIY wiring job literally hanging out of the wall with masking tape and you laid your own tiles and there’s a 2 inch gap between them and the wall . . . then I’m not down, ya digg?
A lot of these looks will probably be from days when we went to viewings because that has sort of taken over our days off, so get ready for a lot of that.
Stila Eyes Are The Window Palette in Spirit | Maybelline The Falsies Waterproof Mascara | Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Diffused Heat | NYX Wonder Pencil In Light | YSL Baby Doll Kiss & Blush #1 | Estee Lauder Doublewear Foundation in Ecru | Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit | Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow Pomade In Dark Brown & Auburn | MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NW20
This was another day off of errands and some light shopping. When I put this eye look on, the redness of the colors made me feel like I looked dead and so I went with a healthy-ish pink lip. I later Decided I hated the way the pink lip paired with it. It kind of took all the edge out of it and made it look too girly. Girly is fine but it’s not really my thing per say. Weirdly, when I switched it to a matt nude lip I liked it a lot more. How counterintuitive is that sh*t for ya? I only got a really badly lit photo of that because it got dark out and I couldn’t find good lighting…
But I felt Like I should show it anyway, because it made the look just come across SO much cooler. Live and learn I guess!
Stila Eyes Are The Window Palette In Spirit | Rimmel Scandal Eyes Pencil In Brown | DiorShow Waterproof Mascara | MAC Pro Longwear Concealer in NW20| Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow Pomade in Dark Brown & Auburn | Urban Decay Lip Pencil in Naked | Lime Crime Velvetine in Cashmere
I didn’t get a full face shot of this because quite frankly I forgot to. Whoopsie Doodles. So this is the same matte nude lip combination that I switched the last look to. I’ve been wearing it quite a lot actually. It’s Lime Crime Velvetine in Cashmere with Urban Decay Lip Pencil in Naked blended into the edges and the corners. I went in to Sephora wearing this and two of the girls asked about my lip color. Those chicks see a lot of makeup in a day so I’ll take that as a resounding compliment. By the way, I thought they discontinued the color naked for some reason but I’ve been pleasantly surprised to find out they have not. Hoorah!
Those are the more interesting of the makeup looks from the past week or so. Normally I would probably have more but with two feet of snow on the ground I’ve been hermitting pretty hard. Hopefully the next few weeks bring better weather and better social life (LOL) so there will be more makeup to discuss. 🙂
