New Years Eve is this week, and maybe I’m the grinchiest grinch of all the grinches but I hate it. I never liked going out for New Years Eve but then I also feel like a loser staying in and stuff, it’s my least favorite holiday by far. Wanna fight about it? Good, I didn’t think so
But most people DO like to go out and I get it. Just let me stay home and order Chinese, you go out and wear glitter and I’ll meet you guys tomorrow for brunch, deal?
Just because I don’t like to go out and ring in the new year doesn’t mean I haven’t though, and I’ve seen WAY too many girls suffer with some serious glitter fallout before the ball drops. I mean if there is a night to wear glitter that is definitely it, but you don’t want to have to hope that everyone is drunk enough not to notice that your glitter started on your eyelids and ended up on your chin either. You aren’t ke$ha. Unless you are and then hi, Ke$ha. Thanks for reading my blog that’s pretty cool.
So if you are going to go out and get festive and wear glitter, here are some tips on how to keep it where it belongs and avoid glitter fallout.
- Whether your eyeshadow has glitter in it, or you are going to wear loose glitter it’s a good idea to do your under eye area AFTER you do your eye makeup. I know it seems really counterintuitive, but it makes sense. A lot of glitter fallout happens when you are applying your eye makeup and it’s very hard to avoid. So doing your under eye area after means you dont have to ruin your foundation and concealer and redo it.
- To minimize the amount of fallout that happens choose to apply your glitter or glitter shadow with a flat and dense eye brush. You want to literally dab it onto the eye area instead of buffing it in. You can go back later and blend just the edges very carefully, but you don’t want to swipe it on over the lid, that will only make a lot of loose particles fall down. Same thing goes for a fluffy brush, they’re great for blending but the are a little too messy for this application.
- Use a primer! Whether the glitter is loose or in an eyeshadow, a primer will help it stay put. It provides a little extra stickiness if you apply it while it’s still damp and even if you are applying the glitter over an eyeshadow the primer will prevent it from getting greasy as the night wears on, which can also cause it to migrate southward.
- If you are using a loose glitter, you should probably look into using some sort of sealer or glitter base. Cake Liner sealer works well, but there are also liquid bases like Lit CLearly Liquid Glitter Base specifically made for use with loose glitter. You still need to use caution while applying it, even if your brush is wet with the sealant but once it’s on it will hang on much tighter than if you try just pressing it over a cream shadow or something.
Hopefully these tips help you avoid glitter fallout this new years eve! If you’re gonna be home acting like an old lady like me then I guess this won’t really apply but ya know . . .nobody want glitter fallout at home on the couch either 😉

I’m with you! I hate going out on NYE. I’m from New Hampshire and everything is too far away and it’s way too cold. I’d much rather snuggle my bulldog and relax inside.
