I love having eyelash extensions. I don’t get them all the time because after a while the upkeep gets a little too costly for my taste, but man oh man do I dig the convenience…and the waking up looking a little more pretty. That’s nice too.
I wrote about my eyelash extensions before, and I did a comparison of my natural lashes before and after to show wether or not it damaged my lashes or made them fall out. You can read the HERE but spoiler alert, my lashes were fine.
I’ve been back on the eyelash extension bandwagon for a while because I’ve been doing a bit of travel the last few months. As a matter of fact by the time you read this I will probably be on the beach in Aruba, hay girl haaaay. There is no better time to have ash extensions than on vacation. Trust me. But this time around I’ve learned a thing or two about taking off your makeup with eyelash extensions that really cuts down on how much they shed between appointments.
The first thing you need is a Micellar water makeup remover. My favorite is Bioderma but a budget friendly dupe (that actually works just as well TBH) is the Garnier Micellar Cleanser.
It’s oil free and super gentle, which is what you want for the extensions, but it is also capable of removing longwearing waterproof makeup.
Now as you can see I’m about to put the cleanser on a washcloth. No, it’s not because I really love the challenge of getting makeup stains out of my laundry. Putting the cleanser on a cloth rather than a cotton pad is super helpful when you have lash extensions because it doesn’t leave behind any lint. Personally I have a giant collection of cheap clothes that I use to wash my face just for this purpose so I’m not so worried about the stains.
I have lost many an extension trying to get the lint from a cotton pad out of my eyelashes. I’m just sayin.

Once I pour some of the cleanser onto the cloth I like to place it on my closed eyelid for a few moments and just let it sit. No rubby rubby, no swipey swipey. Just leave it there and let it do its thing.
Once you have held it on there for around 30 seconds to a minute you can gently wipe away the majority of what’s on your lid, avoiding the immediate lash line area. Because for that we are going to get a bit more precise.
Grab a cotton swab and soak one end of it it the Micellar Water. Really make sure you get it soaked. Then gently rub away the remaining makeup that is close to your precious baby lash extensions. It shouldn’t be too difficult to remove because you already loosened it up quite a bit by letting the cleansing water soak into it, but be gentle. It’s better to go back over it a few times than to get rough and damage the base of your extensions.
If I have them on hand I like the precision tip cotton swabs because duh, they’re more precise. But I’ve been using the regular ones and they work fine as well you just have to be slightly more careful.
Bing bang boom, your makeup is off and your extensions are still in good shape. When I took these photos I had my extensions on for nearly three weeks and this is how well they held up, which so really really impressive. The time prior to this set lasted nearly as well and that was through swimming and sweating and falling face first into the ocean off a paddle board…so I think I’ve nailed the process at this point.
Hope that helps if you have been having a hard time washing off your waterproof winged liner and smokey eyes and what have you without damaging your pretty extensions! I’m gonna go get ready to swim around looking like Beyonce with my fly ass lashes now.

Thinking of getting my first set…gave up nails a while back…maintenance cost is about the same! I will take FAB lashes over nails…ALL DAY LONG! Great info and I am already a Micellar water fan! Pics were a great help! Thank you Thank you!
Yes the maintenance is very similar to nails and I totally justify them with the fact that I do my own! ???? I’m without extensions for the first time since May and I miss them already, I think you’ll really enjoy them! So glad you found this helpful! ❤️❤️

Love micellar water, but won’t use bioderma or garnier, as neither are cruelty free unfortunately.
Oh you know I figured Garnier might not be but I didn’t know about Bioderma! Good to know! I haven’t tried a ton of micellar waters but there are a lot of others on the market these days. Might be time to find a better choice.
Is it okay to use a water resistant or water proof mascara for just 1 day while you have lash extensions? I will have them for my wedding and want something water proof to hold up to the potential tears. Thanks!
Hey Allie! The problem with wearing waterproof mascara even for just one day is that you need something oil based to remove it, and that will break down the glue that holds the extensions on. So if you don’t care whether they look good after the wedding day then you may be ok with risking that, but if you are going to leave directly after the wedding for your honeymoon and wont be able to go and have them filled in at your leisure then I wouldn’t recommend it. There’s nothing worse than half shed lashes when you’re far from a salon and trying to look cute in photos lol!
Thank you so much for this info. Getting my first set. (Excited)! Now I know what to do. Do you have any tips about the lashes, and, airbrush system makeup?
Oh yay! I hope it helps! Hmmm for the lashes I definitely recommend trying not to sleep face down, it squishes them a little and sometimes even knocks them out of place. And definitely avoid waterproof makeup if you can, especially mascara! I don’t use airbursh makeup myself but I know tons of working artists and also just makeup enthusiasts really like Temptu products because they’re portable and some of them can also be used without the airbrush mechanism.
Hope that’s helpful!
Hello! Do you put mascara on your lashes as well??
Nope! Mascara can be really damaging to them, there are certain “tubing mascaras” that you can use but I prefer not to mess with it.
Hi, This Garner micellar cleanser contains Glycol which I thought breaks down the eyelash extension glue.
Is glycol bad for eyelash extensions?
Not that I’m aware of! I was never told to avoid it by my technicians and it didn’t have an adverse effect on my extensions.
Hello! Have you tried using waterproof eyeliner everyday with your lash extensions? Does it still remain mostly intact throughout its 3-4 week cycle? Thanks in advance! 🙂
I have! If you take it off with oil free removers it isn’t too bad but you have to be super patient because rubbing too much damages the lashes. It can be done but I would be very careful.
Indeed, addicting! I get my lashes touched up every 3 weeks, so mascara is fun for a night out with the man ? One thing that helps me get it out is (after using your micellar water & towel trick) is to dip a disposable mascara brush into the micellar water then GENTLY brush it out! You may need to rinse the wand and dip it again, but this makes it so easy, since you’re recommended to brush them often anyways!
Brilliant! Thanks for the tip!
So do you not recommend the garnier blue cap micellar water as it’s for waterproof makeup?
If it is oil free it should be fine, but I’m not familiar with the formula off hand! If you read the ingredients and still aren’t sure give your lash tech a call and they will probably be happy to help you out ❤️
