Oh Purple Lipstick, let me count the ways . . .Five. I came up with five. That was anticlimactic.
So I don’t always love the trends that come and go with the seasons, but this Spring and Summer there is some really fun stuff going on with lip colors. One of the trends I’m diggin’ is the purple lipstick trend. The great thing about trends like this is that you can make it as extreme or as mild as you want, depending on how timid or ballsy you are feeling. So I gathered five purple-y lip colors that will cover pretty much the entire spectrum . . .of ballsyness, not the entire spectrum of color, obviously. Let’s start on the mild end . . .
Stila “Aria” - By now you probably know how obsessed I am with the Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipsticks. If not then I’ll catch you up real quick - They are the TRUTH. But anyway, I originally picked this color up because I wanted another shade of my favorite formula, and I’m not gonna lie to you, I chose this one because the name reminded me of Arya Stark. But as it turns out, it’s a really beautiful plummy mauve purple color, and I don’t really have anything else like it in my collection, so that worked out quite well!
This color is a good gateway purple if you’re thinking you might be into the trend but aren’t exactly ready to dive into the deep end of the pool. Plus, it stays on forever and ever and looks all velvety and gorgeous so you can’t lose.
MAC “Rebel” - When I first purchased MAC Rebel, I thought maybe I was being a little frivolous because I might not get a ton of wear out of it, but boy was I wrong. It’s a purple type of color for sure but it’s definitely wearable. I think that’s because it has so much pink it it still. It’s a satin finish so it doesn’t wear as long as MAC’s matte formulas, but it still lasts pretty well and it isn’t as drying on the lips. It also pairs well with a surprising number of makeup looks. I’ve worn it with navy eyes, smokey silver, golds, you name it.
Long story short, this one is still sort of on the safer side but definitely purple . . .regardless you will probably find yourself wearing it more than you expected you might.
Maybelline Lip Elixir “Vision in Violet” - For some reason when I first brought this home I didn’t like it. I don’t know what I was thinking though to be honest because I pulled this out again last week and now I’m kinda loving it. A lot. I’ve heard the lip elixir formula compared to the YSL Glossy Stains, and I can sorta see where that’s coming from, but they definitely don’t set the same or last as long. They do have the same sort of thick laminating effect and color pay off though.
As for the color, WOO this is some purple gloss folks. Vibrant shiny purple. But it still has enough pink it it that it’s flattering and easy to wear. I’ve been pairing it with a simple eye and a flick of back liquid eyeliner and it makes a fun look out of something very quick and easy.
OCC LipTar “Hoochie” - OCC Lip Tars never disappoint, so if you are going to wear vibrant pastel purple you might as well wear one that stays on all day right? Plus, I don’t know about you but I find the name pretty entertaining in a very 2LiveCrew kinda way.
This one is still super wearable, despite its’s vibrance it’s definitely got a more pastel feel so it’s really nice for a bold lip look that translates well to spring and summer. I got a lot of wear out of this last year . . .and purple lips weren’t even a trend yet!
Illamasqua “Kontrol” - I know this one is definitely not something most people would ever wear, but for those of you who would GOOD FOR YOU! Seriously, I know that sounds sarcastic, but if you can rock a crazy blue-purple lipstick and feel good about it, then you’re doing something right. I’ve worn this out before, because screw it, why not? I like it. The formula is a tiny bit dry, but as long as you apply it carefully and take your time it’s really not a problem.
I like to pair this with something neautral on the eyes, and a very defined lash line. I also find that it’s easier to pull off when I have a little more of a tan, because it helps to avoid the whole “corpse” look. It’s definitely vampy, but vampy doesn’t have to mean undead . . .wait vampires are undead right? Crap. You get my point.
Overall though, I think if you have the guts to wear it, this is a really great lipstick.
Sometime next week I think I’m going to do a feature on my favorite orange lipsticks as well. I looooove me some orange lips. So stay tuned while I gather some of those up for you!
