The whole neutral/mauve/nude matte 90s lip liner thing is everywhere right now. Still. I mean MAC lipliner in whirl has been selling out for pretty much a year straight. I’m running low on my favorite Naked pencil from Urban Decay and it’s sold out too.
I can’t say I blame everyone for buying it though, it’s basically a sweet little pencil filled with life, creamy goodness, and everything that’s right in the world. Don’t worry I’m on the re-stock email list so I’ll be on that like cheese on nachos as soon as it comes back.
There are a few of these nude-ish shades (and rosey neutral ones) that have been a little easier to find, and are available at the drugstore. So I wanted to swatch a couple of them today in case you aren’t into snatching weaves at the MAC counter to get your hands on a Whirl pencil, or you just feel like saving a few bucks by getting a drugstore version.
Speaking of whirl, NYX mauve is a pretty close dupe. To be honest MAC lip pencils aren’t that special of a formula, so for the price I think this is just as good if not better.
This one is definitely more on the rosy side, but it falls into that 90s matte, midi tone sort of look that so huge right now. It’s such a pretty color and the formula of these lip pencils is actually nicer than a lot of high end lip liners I’ve tried. It also lasts all day and looks really smooth on the lips.
Natural is a real nude-nude. It’s really neutral and I find that it’s a great color that looks truly nude without washing me out, so if you’re on the pale side and you find that nude mattes make you look a little dead then this might be one to try for you. I find this one to be a tad on the dry side though so I apply it over just a dab of balm and it goes on much nicer.
If you’re looking for more matte nudes in lipstick form as well as pencil I have more swatches that you can check out HERE. Do you have a favorite 90s lip liner color? Let me know what it is, I wanna try it too!
