I’ve been making things in my kitchen again. I think I like doing these DIY beauty ideas because when I was a kid I wanted to be a scientist. Back then I had no idea that scientists had to do math, which is my greatest weakness, so I thought I was a shoe-in. I was only aware of the mixing things together in a lab portion of the job description. Now that I’m an adult in the real world, a blogger making scrubs and balms in my kitchen is as close as I’m going to get . . .and I’m pretty okay with that.
Luckily it seems that you guy enjoy these simple DIYs as well, so today let’s make a Chai flavored lip balm! It’s simple, hydrating and it smells awesome. Here’s what you’ll need . . .
Take Three Tablespoons of coconut oil and warm it up in a microwave safe bowl until it is liquid, and fairly warm. Then take three of your chai tea bags and place them into the bowl of warm oil.
In order to get the flavor from the tea into the oil you will need to let it sit in the warm oil for several hours. The oil needs to be warm the entire time or it will harden up so I recommend putting the bowl with the tea and the oil into the microwave for 30 seconds every 45 minutes or so. I left my chai to steep for around 3 hours and my chai flavor was very delicate. If you want a stronger flavor you can add more tea bags and/or leave it to steep for longer.
Microwave some Shea Butter at 30 second intervals until it is liquid enough for you to mix into the oil. Add one teaspoon and stir in gently. Pour into whatever container you plan on using with a tablespoon. I used an old cream eyeshadow container that I cleaned out and put through the dishwasher, but you can buy various lip balm tins online.
Once the mixture reaches room temperature it should be solid in your container. I popped mine in the fridge to help that happen a little more quickly. I’m annoyingly impatient. Then you can either go ahead and use it, or make a nice label and give it as a stocking stuffer!
